D8 Monday: Edwards' 30+ Performance Helps Mustangs Gallop Past Phoenix

All good things must come to an end.

After I went 13-for-13 among picked games to start the season, the surging Monsignor Doyle Mustangs put an end to any hope of a perfect season by knocking off the Resurrection Phoenix by a 58-49 final in a relatively high-scoring affair down in South Cambridge this afternoon.

The Phoenix had difficulty containing Mustang star Sam Edwards, who poured in a CWOSSA season-high 32 points to lead MDCSS in this one.  Teammate Destiny DaSilva, meanwhile, picked a great time to have her first double-digit outing of the D8 regular season with 10 points.  Rez' star guard Megan Robinson had 20 for the Phoenix, while Melissa Stocco added in 14.

The win means that Resurrection and Monsignor Doyle are now tied for 3rd in the league standings with 3-3 records; however, if the two teams end up with identical records after the regular season ends, Resurrection would be awarded 3rd based upon the plus/minus of the two head-to-head games (Rez won by 19 in the season opener).

While we're at it, let's not leave St. David out of the mix here either.  Though they defeated Resurrection and Monsignor Doyle the first time around, they did so by a combined 9 points ---- so there is the very real possibility that one or both teams could turn the table next time around and really make things interesting in the D8 standings!

Speaking of those Celtics, they had no problem demolishing the last-place Rockway Flames by a 75-13 final.  Emily Brown led St. David with 17, while Alex Hood replied with all 13 for Rockway.

The Celts stay in the thick of the playoff hunt with a win over Rockway.  Nicole Jamison (12) and Cassie Duffhues (8) led the way on Monday afternoon for St. David, who even up their record at 3-3.  Emma Kschesinski provided 10 points for Rockway, while her teammate Stephanie Veltri put in 8.
