Mark's Picks: Thursday, October 21st

Hard to believe that we're getting towards the end of October already --- which means we're already starting to near the end of the regular seasons.  In D10 and WCSSAA, both leagues have 5 scheduled game dates remaining.

Anyways, let's get right to it.  Tuesday's games saw a 3-1 picks effort in the D10 league, and a perfect 7-0 in WCSSAA.  That makes the running totals as follows:

D10 Picks YTD:  34-2, .944
WCSSAA Picks YTD:  43-7, .860

D10 Senior:  Thursday Picks

Centre Wellington (7-2) at Bishop Mac (9-0)
Last Time:  Bishop Mac 56, CWDHS 53
Pick:  Bishop Mac
The CWDHS Falcons came close last time, but I don't expect things to go as smoothly this time around.  The Falcons are still dealing with bad news from Tuesday's game, when star forward Jaime Janssen had a scary fall that apparently knocked her unconscious during the game against Orangeville.  Word is that she may be out for the season; if in fact it is true, it would be a huge loss for the Falcons.  Hopefully she gets better soon, but in the meantime, getting back to the game at hand, Celtics to win here.

St. James (1-8) at JF Ross (7-2)
Last Time:  JF Ross 49, St. James 27
Pick:  JF Ross
The Royals should handle the Lions here, and in the process overtake the CWDHS Falcons for 2nd in the D10 standings.

Centennial (3-6) at Guelph CVI (5-4)
Last Time:  GCVI 47, Centennial 22
Pick:  GCVI
A big game for the Gaels, who are attempting to hold off the Lourdes Crusaders for 4th place (and a home playoff game), while still having their sites set on the two "AAAA" schools ahead of them in JF Ross and CWDHS.  They get their 6th win of the year here.

Lourdes (4-5) at Orangeville (0-9)
Last Time:  Lourdes 44, Orangeville 23
Pick:  OLOL
Lourdes should still have enough depth to take care of the winless Bears here --- including today's game, 3 of their remaining 5 contests are against the teams below them in the standings.

WCSSAA Senior:  Thursday Picks

Eastwood (6-1) at Waterloo CI (7-0) **Game of the Day**
Pick:  WCI
We'll throw out the "game of the day" moniker here, which I haven't been doing much so far to this point in the season.  However, when two teams enter a game with a combined record of 13-1, it definitely fits the bill.  In this one, I think the Vikes are just a bit too deep for the Rebels, and I look for them to post their 8th win of the year at home.  Michelle Hudyn might be able to keep ECI close at first, but look for the Vikes to pull away late.

Jacob Hespeler (2-5) at Glenview Park (0-7)
Pick:  JHSS
The Hawks need this win to improve their playoff chances ---- I think they'll get it, but the Panthers haven't been pushovers at home and a GPSS win here gets them right back into thinking about a possible playoff berth themselves.

Cameron Heights (6-1) at Bluevale (5-2)
Pick:  CHCI
This one should be almost equally as good as the WCI/ECI game from a competitiveness standpoint.  And, also like the WCI/ECI contest, both clubs are top-10 in my last "AAAA" ranking.  I currently have the Gaels as higher ranked, plus they're looking solid right now, so I'll give them the edge even on the road at Bluevale.

Elmira (3-4) at SJAM (3-4) --- at EDSS
Pick:  EDSS
The Lancers have been my arch-nemesis to this point in the season, as they have accounted for a couple of my 7 losses.  I've either been giving them too much respect, or not enough respect, it seems.  That last comment seems fitting of a .500 club, so I'll tab them to win this one at home and improve to 4-4.

Forest Heights (1-6) at Grand River (2-5)
Pick:  GRCI
The Rens need this win in the worst way.  Although they will get a "bye win" next week, their brutal schedule still includes Bluevale, Eastwood, and Preston --- who are currently a combined 16-5.  I think they'll win this one over Blair McNaughton and the Trojans.

Southwood (4-3) at Preston (5-2)
Pick:  PHS
In what should be a close game over at Preston, I'll give the slight edge to Preston.  A PHS win for them would be huge heading into games next week that look difficult on paper (WCI and KCI).  Of course, being 2 games in hand on another "AAA" school would be big as well.

Waterloo-Oxford (2-5) at KCI (6-1)
Pick:  KCI
Look for the Raiders to get another win here as they work towards getting an important first-round bye and a home quarterfinal game.
