Junior: St. James Sweeps MDCSS Tournament

The St. James Lions' junior girls squad continued their winning ways at the Monsignor Doyle Round Robin Tournament this past weekend.

The Lions, my current #1 team at AAA, won their three contests by an average of 33 points.  Perhaps this is even more impressive when you consider that two of the three teams that they faced were ranked clubs in last week's AAA or AAAA CWOSSA top tens.

In their opener, St. James received a 19-point effort from Ashley Benham en route to a 59-29 win over St. Benedict CSS, who are currently undefeated in D8 play.

The Lions then cruised past Monsignor Doyle 60-16, thanks to 4 players in double figures (Brittany Gazzola 13, Chelsey Gazzola 13, Ashley Benham 12, Keely McVicar 10).

In their finale against Preston, the Lions were missing starter Cristina Berardine who was quickly joined on the sidelines by Benham after she was injured in the opening quarter.  Despite the personnel losses, the St. James pressure was too much for the Panthers as they still won 59-34, backed by Chelsey Gazzola (12), Julia Toscan (11) and Brittany Gazzola (10).

St. Benedict finished second (2-1), Preston was third (1-2) and the host Mustangs were 0-3.  Scores from those games were as follows:

Preston 40, Monsignor Doyle 13
St. Benedict 31, Preston 28
St. Benedict 60, Monsignor Doyle 16
