D8 Monday: Senior Eagles Soar Above Competition

Looks like the exam break didn't slow down the Senior basketball team at Kitchener St. Mary's.

The Eagles jumped out to a 25-2 first quarter lead over their closest league rivals, the Resurrection Phoenix, en route to an 81-46 win on Monday.

Not like there was any doubt as their closest league game has been 23 points, but the win also officially locked up first place in the D8 standings for the 10-0 Eagles.

Tyrick Thompson and Telloy Simon had 19 points each for St. Mary's, while Patric McGlynn had 18 and Jacob Gilbert 8 for Rez.

Monday's other two games also went as expected.

St. Benedict received 12 points from Shawn Ramos and 7 from Aaron Zammit in a 47-19 win over Woodland.  Ben Hoekstra led the Cavs with 6.

St. David got a couple of huge scoring performances from Jake Winter (29) and Francis Samson (20) in a 71-48 win over Rockway.  Simon Pudwell (11) and Kris Eroy (10) both had double-digit efforts for the Flames.

Junior
Things were a bit more competitive in the junior tilt between St. Mary's and Rez, as the teams continued the trend of competitive games among the top teams in the D8 junior circuit.

St. Mary's survived a furious Resurrection final-minute attack in a 46-43 win on the road that clinched a home playoff date for the Eagles.  St. Mary's led 46-38 with a minute to go but Rez forced several turnovers down the stretch and actually had a three-point attempt to tie the game with under :10 to go.

Adham Eleeda (15) and Henoak Albara (11) led the way for the Eagles.  Jake Rush had a game-high 18 for the Phoenix, with fellow grade nine Ali Rashid adding 10 points.

In other action, St. David handled Rockway 60-32, with George Dumitru (13) leading the way for St. David.  Connor Huxman had 10 for the Flames.

St. Benedict cruised past Woodland CHS 73-23.  Khiem Tran had a game-high 13 for the Saints while Tristan VanderHoef and Drew Carrick had 6 each for Woodland.
