D8 Senior: Eagles, Phoenix Roar To Final

It's déjà-vu all over again.

For the fourth consecutive season, the St. Mary's Eagles and the Resurrection Phoenix will meet in the District 8 championship final, to be played on Friday evening at the University of Waterloo (8:00pm).

St. Mary's is the decisive favourite to repeat as D8 champions, while Rez will be looking for an upset and their third D8 title in four seasons.

The top-seeded Eagles exploded for 84 points in an 84-44 demolition of #4 St. David.  Telloy Simon (19) and Avery Sutton (15) led the way for the Eagles, while Francis Samson (game high 23) and Jake Winter (19) combined for all but two of the St. David points.

Meanwhile, after two relatively close games with St. Benedict during the regular season, Resurrection left no doubt that they are a top 2 team in the D8 league on Wednesday afternoon.

The Phoenix raced to a 27-9 first-half advantage, extended that lead to 41-17 in the third quarter, and then cruised home in a 60-39 victory.

Patric McGlynn led the way for the Phoenix with 20 points, while Jacob Gilbert netted 13.  Tyler Moulton had 19 points to lead the Saints, with Brendan Flannigan adding 9.

St. Mary's soundly defeated Resurrection in both league games (78-47 and 81-46), but Resurrection isn't conceding defeat just yet.

"We’ll approach that game the same way we approached Bennies (yesterday). It’s zero-zero, fresh start, and haven’t played them yet, so to speak,” Rez F Tyler Bartley told Record Reporter Mark Bryson yesterday.

As announced on Wednesday, the loser of Friday's game will get a "play-in game" against D10 #2 (JF Ross or Centennial loser) for a CWOSSA tournament berth.
