D8 Wednesday: Junior Saints Lock Up Top Spot

Junior
The St. Benedict Saints moved to 10-1, locking up first place in the D8 standings in the process, with a 41-36 road win yesterday at St. Mary's.

It was a competitive and low-scoring first-half (14-14 at halftime), as some nerves seemed to show early.  However, both teams seemed to find more of an offensive groove in the second sixteen minutes, with the Saints getting some good production down the stretch to pick up the win.

Alex Douglas (11) and Khiem Tran (10) led St. Benedict, while Adham Eleeda netted a game-high 13 with Henoak Albara adding 11 more for St. Mary's.

St. Benedict (10-1) now owns the season-series tiebreak over St. Mary's (9-2), so even should the Saints fall in their season finale to Monsingor Doyle, they will finish in first place in the D8 standings.

Other results on Wednesday also solidified the league standings and playoff matchups.

With a playoff berth on the line, the Resurrection Phoenix came out on fire against the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs, jumping to a 20-point halftime advantage before winning by a 51-35 final in Cambridge.  Joe Hunter had 13 points to lead Rez, while Ryan Stafford and Jordan Deveney-Reid had 10 each for the 'Stangs.

Resurrection improved to 6-5 and clinched 4th place in the D8 standings, while Monsignor Doyle fell to 4-7.  Despite the losses, Doyle made great strides this season in D8 junior play; yesterday's game was their first loss by more than 9 points.

Also on Wednesday, St. David defeated Woodland 65-31.  George Dumitru had 12 points to lead the Celtics.

On the senior side of things, the games were not quite as competitive on Wednesday.

Resurrection trailed Monsignor Doyle early on, but a big game from Jacob Gilbert helped them pull away from the Mustangs in a 64-41 game.  Gilbert put home 28 points in the win, while Tyler Bartley added 8 for Rez.  Uzair Khan (18) and Tyler Saris (14) paced MDCSS.

St. David had three players in double-figures (Matt Murawsky 12, Jake Winter 11, Matt Scanlon 11) as they defeated Woodland 50-26.  Trent Fisher had 6 and Nathan Katenberg 4 for the Cavs.
