D8 Results & Standings: Rez Holds Off Charging Mustangs

Senior D8

In D8 play today, the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs nearly pulled off another big shocker.

I was only able to catch the waning moments of the game, but the Phoenix were able to hold off the Mustangs by a 66-58 final. The score was tied at 33-33 at halftime, but eventually Resurrection's pressure defense wore down the Mustangs in the second half and allowed them to escape with the win. The Stangs were still within 6 with 1:00 to go but missed 3's and Rez FTs resulted in the final margin.

The Stangs have proven that they are a team that can't be taken lightly this year and will battle St. David next week with the #3 seed in the playoffs on the line ---- and possibly the AAA CWOSSA berth as well. Monsignor Doyle first burst onto the scene by beating SDCSS at St. David back in December.

For Doyle, Josh Loehle had 23 points (Sportsline had incorrect high scorers listed). Tyler Schneider (13) and Matt Stocco (12) led Rez.

In the other senior game on Wednesday night, St. Benedict blew out Rockway 66-28. Derrick Strickland had 16 for St. Benedict, while Godwin Luk led Rockway with 13.

Senior Standings are as follows:
1. Resurrection 7-1 (X - clinched playoff berth)
2. St. Mary's 6-1
3. St. David 4-4
T4. Monsignor Doyle 3-4
---------
T4. St. Benedict 3-4
6. Rockway 0-9

Junior D8

In junior D8 action, Jordan Freeman chipped in 9 points and Kyle Wilson contributed 8 off the bench as the RCSS Phoenix improved to 8-0 with a 61-11 shellacking of Monsingor Doyle. Manveer Singh and Ryan Clayton had 3 each for Doyle.

Meanwhile over in Cambridge, St. Benedict got all they could handle from Rockway but prevailed 33-24. Kevin Heath (8) was the high man for Bennies, while Steve Veltri hit double figures for the Flames with 10.

The win means that all playoff spots in the D8 junior league have been accounted for ---- but the order is yet to be determined. RCSS, SMHS, SDCSS, and SBCSS have qualified.

The order will likely be: (1) RCSS, (2) SMHS, (3) SDCSS and (4) SBCSS. Resurrection needs to win one of their remaining 2 games (St. Mary's or St. Benedict) to clinch first overall. St. Mary's will likely lock up 2nd spot (as they hold the tiebreak over St. David) while the Celts have the inside edge for 3rd over St. Benedict.

Current D8 Standings:
1. Resurrection 8-0 (X)
2. St. Mary's 5-2 (X)
T3. St. David 4-3 (X)
T3. St. Benedict 4-3 (X)
-----
5. Rockway 1-7
6. St. Benedict 0-7
