D8 Senior: Resurrection 42, St. David 35

Let's just chalk that one up to the "Monday afternoon tournament hangover".

If any of you are in the process of putting together a basketball DVD relating to offense, it would be safe to say that there wouldn't be a lot of footage from Monday night at St. David that would make it in.

The Phoenix and Celtics decided to brick their way to an old school D8 "first team to 40 wins" 42-35 final for Resurrection.

But really, how bad was it?

St. David mustered just 12 points in the first half and only ATTEMPTED 13 field goals. They hit just 2 of those (15.9% FG). Dan Hummel kept them in it with some free throws, and accounted for 10 of the Celtics' 12 first half points.

Resurrection wasn't much better. The Phoenix attempted 20 more shots than the Celts in the first half (due to some "volleyball" at the basket and fewer turnovers), however, they only cashed in on 9 of them (27.3% FG). At recess they held a 20-12 lead.

The Celtics seemed to wake up in the 3rd quarter. After a Tyler Schneider three-pointer for Rez to open the scoring, the Celts went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 23-22. However, the Phoenix would end the quarter on a 6-2 "run" which was capped by Brandon Lee picking the pocket of Dan Hummel and going in for a layup in the final minute.

The fourth quarter started with the Celtics going scoreless for the first 3:00 of the fourth quarter, however, the Phoenix still couldn't quite put them away, managing just 6 points themselves during this span to lead 35-24.

The Celtics looked at their best down 8 in the final minute, when 2 Celtic three-pointers surrounded by a Rez made free throw cut the lead all the way down to 3 with :20 to play. However, Tyler Schneider iced the game at the line for Resurrection by connecting on four straight FTs and ending the game 42-35 for the Phoenix.

For Resurrection, Schneider was only 1-9 from the floor but 11-15 from the line en route to 14 points. Mike Pereira had a solid game off the bench with 8 points and 12 rebounds. Dan Hummel led St. David with 17 points.

Both teams actually shot below 25% from the floor for the game. The Phoenix finished the game shooting 24.5% from the floor and 15.4% from the three-point line. The Celtics made only seven field goals before their two threes in the final minute helped up their shooting percentages to 24.3% from the floor and 22.7% from beyond the arc.

The win essentially assures Resurrection of a first-round home playoff game. The Phoenix and St. Mary's Eagles will duke it out for first place next Wednesday, January 20th at St. Mary's (5:00pm).

In the first game of the junior-senior doubleheader, Resurrection topped St. David 61-43.
