WCSSAA Junior: Cameron Knocks Forest Heights From Unbeaten Ranks

It's shaping up to be an interesting final week in the WCSSAA junior boys basketball season.

The Cameron Heights Gaels set the tone with a 52-50 squeaker over the Forest Heights Trojans, a win that actually gives the Gaels (10-1) first place in the standings over Forest Heights (10-1), as Cameron now holds the head to head tiebreaker.  Cameron will play WCI in their season finale on Thursday at home, while Forest Heights will battle SJAM --- both CHCI and FHCI would be strong favourites in those games.

The Gaels were able to withstand a 31 point barrage from FHCI star Juwan Miller (Ian Anderson added 8 for the Trojans --- an impressive 78% of their total points).  Cameron received 15 from Milos Jovkovic while forward Jason Thompson netted 13.

Here's how the rest of Tuesday's action went:

Grand River 55, Bluevale 45
Seems like the Rens are picking up steam here at the end of the season.  Murtada Khamis (23) and Chuder Teny (20) formed a formidable 1-2 punch on Tuesday, while BCI received 13 each from Jeevan Sidhu and John Efechaobor.

WCI 52, SJAM 36
The Vikes continue their surge up the standings in the late going, thanks to 15 from Nick Johnny, 15 from Bojan Vincic and 13 from Max Pfeifle.  Sayaad Bacchus led the 'Landers (and all scorers) with 17.

Eastwood 55, Elmira 36
Ousmane Kromah (ECI) gets into the 20+ club with a 21-point effort on Tuesday, while his teammate Izzy Nemeth checked in with 9.  Walker Stuart notched 10 for Elmira in the loss.

KCI 49, Preston 39
Key win for the Raiders as they look to solidify a first-round home playoff game.  Julian Greer led the way with 12, while Matt McKinnon had 11.  Aaron Colter (12) and Marselis Subban (11) were the high scorers here for PHS.

WODSS 36, Southwood 34
WODSS gets their first win on the year, so congrats to them for that.  Looks like it was a hard-fought battle against the (still winless) Southwood Sabres.  Alex Trotter had 16 for W-O, with Kale Bryant knocking in 9.  Colton Quigley (14) and Zac Sauer (11) were tops for SSS.

Galt 58, Jacob Hespeler 42
The Ghosts continue their strong play as they improve to 8-3 on the season.  Faizan Fayyaz (14) and Lazar Stevanovic (13) were the high Ghost scorers on Tuesday; Hespeler was led by James Roberts (16) and Simon Beeksma (10).

Glenview Park 45, Huron Heights 32
Sean Davidson (18) and Tristan Price (15) led the way for the Panthers as they stay in the hunt for a first-round bye with a win over HHHS.  Nathaniel Ernst-Finnie had 15 and Alex Deadman 8 for the Huskies.

Playoff Picture
Cameron Heights and Forest Heights have clinched the top 2 spots.  I don't see either losing on Thursday, so look for the Gaels to finish 1st and the Trojans 2nd, as a result of today's CHCI win and tiebreak.

After that, it gets interesting.

Bluevale will play ECI on Thursday, while GPSS plays 1-10 WODSS, Galt battles 2-9 Preston, and Grand River takes on 4-7 Elmira.  Again, there's a reason why the games are played, but we can all agree that Glenview Park, Galt, and GRCI would be strong favourites in those games and should win if they stick to their game plans.

If Bluevale can also top Eastwood, then we would have the intriguing "four way tie" for 3rd place, and all 4 teams have not played each other, so we would go to the "strength of schedule" tiebreak, which at first glance would look to favour the "AAAA" schools.

Now, if Eastwood can beat the Knights at home (and GRCI/GCI/GPSS win), the playoff picture would see Galt take 3rd, Glenview 4th and Grand River 5th.  It would be under 5.3.6. of the WCSSAA tiebreak rules:

"If team ‘A’ (Galt) beats team ‘B’ (Glenview), and team ‘B’ (Glenview) beats team ‘C’ (Grand River), but ‘A’ (Galt) and ‘C’ (Grand River) do not play, the standings would result in: (A-B-C)."

Then, you'd also have a potential three-way tie for 6th with Bluevale (8-4), ECI (8-4), and KCI (8-4), provided the Raiders can get past Jacob Hespeler at home.  All three would be 1-1 against each other, with BCI posting a 17-point win over KCI (capped at 15 for the plus-minus) and KCI topping Eastwood by 9.  So, entering Thursday's game:

BCI +15
KCI -6
ECI -9

....meaning that if Eastwood wins, they would have to win big (13+) to take charge of the plus/minus among the tied teams.  If they can do that, then they would finish 6th, Bluevale 7th and KCI 8th.  Otherwise, Bluevale would win the plus/minus battle, and KCI would then take 7th due to their head-to-head win over ECI (again, after the tie is broken, head-to-head becomes the next tiebreak).

Of course, Bluevale can put and end to all that discussion with a win on Thursday.

Even with one game left, still a lot of basketball to be played.
