Owen Sound Sun Times: Falcons Surprised With Perfect Season

Article By:  Bill Walker

The rebuilding year has worked perfectly for the OSCVI Falcons, who were 10-0 in Bluewater Athletic Association senior boys basketball play this season.

"We're not the kind of team that dominates but we certainly thought we could win every game going into it," Falcons coach Lee Jacques said on Tuesday following OSCVI's 57-36 win over the St. Mary's Mustangs in BAA north division senior boys basketball quarterfinal action.

"We're not dominating and we probably didn't expect to go 10-0 (in the regular season)."

Ben Ewasko led the Falcons with 14 points, while Kevin Bunn chipped in with 13.

"I thought defensively our work ethic was real good," said Jacques. "Sometimes we play hard but we don't play smart, but we were smart to go with the hard work. It was a good effort for us."

Nathan Ayheart and Savick Basra both had eight points for the Mustangs.

"Our three-point game wasn't working and we weren't getting the ball in time for the open look," said St. Mary's coach Gerry Kroeplin. "There was a little bit of frustration from that and guys started to do a lot of individual stuff. That's not our style and when that happens, we get in trouble."

The Falcons advance to the BAA championship tournament at OSCVI on Thursday. The Falcons will play the Kincardine District Knights in one semifinal at 1 p.m.

Walkerton's Sacred Heart will play at 2:30 p.m. against Grey Highlands, who beat West Hill 50-45 on Tuesday. Sam Symons, Toby Hall and Chris Woods combined for 40 points for the Lions.

The final is set for 5:30 p.m.

The junior Falcons beat the West Hill Raiders 56-21 in the north junior quarterfinal.

Nathan Curry led all scorers with 21 points, while Connor Joyce had eight points.

OSCVI advances to the BAA tournament and will play at 1 p.m.

An opponent has not been finalized as of yet.

The junior final is at 4 p.m.
