Brantford Expositor: BCI, Paris Advance To Senior Semifinals

Article By:  Vincent Ball

The Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs earned a spot in the semifinals of the Brant County senior boys basketball playoffs thanks to a stellar rebounding effort and some disciplined second-half play on Tuesday night.

"If we don't rebound well, then we don't win," BCI coach Bob Boos said after the Mustangs beat the Assumption College Lions 38-36. "Joseph (Yelle) and Le-Hi (Milbin) did a great job rebounding all game.

"We had 13 fouls in the first half and we were behind. I told them to stop fouling in the second and they did. That made a difference."

Alex Packer led the Mustangs with 11 points, including back-to-back three-pointers in the first half. But he wasn't the only offensive weapon.

The Mustangs got points from seven players, including Yelle with 10, Robert Moxley with six and Milbin with four.

The Lions, on the other hand, got most of their scoring from Andre Toic, a Grade 9 student, who led all scorers with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Pat Wilson and Justin Thibideau scored 5 points each for the Lions.

The Lions used a half-court press to force a couple of turnovers and scored five points on foul shots to take an 11-7 lead in the first quarter.

However, in the second quarter, the Lions scored only three points on foul shots, despite going to the line 12 times. Still, the Lions led 20-17 going into the second half and held a 27-25 point lead after three quarters.

In the final quarter, Yelle scored six points, including a couple of foul shots, and the Mustangs outscored the Lions 13-9 to win the game.

"They hit their shots and we didn't," Toic said after playing a superb game for the Lions.

The Mustangs now take on the North Park Trojans who finished first in regular season play on Thursday at North Park Collegiate at 7:30 p.m. The other semifinal will see the Paris Panthers take on the St. John's College Green Eagles at St. John's at 7 p.m.

Josh Fabe scored 15 and Parker McIntyre scored 14 to lead the Panthers to a 49-38 victory of the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds in the other boys' senior quarter-final game on Tuesday. Adam Sharp and Jacob Kelley scored nine each to help the Panthers to victory.

Tyler Campbell, Mike Campbell scored 12 and Tyler Thibert scored six for the Thunderbirds.

In junior boys quarter-final action, Assumption College beat the Paris 54-33 to earn a spot in the semifinals against St. John's at St. John's College beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Nolan Drong scored 19 points for Assumption, while Ben Crocock and Zoltan Barna each scored nine.

For Paris, Kevin Hmiel scored eight, Harji Gill scored seven and Zach Shewfelt and Graeme Campbell each scored six.

In the other quarter-final game, BCI beat Pauline Johnson 59-17 with Chris Gorski scoring 21 for BCI. Mackenzie Mark scored 10 for BCI, while Liam MacNeil and Ryan Jamula each scored six.

PJ were led in scoring by Brandon Patterson with six points, Cam Emmett with four and Thomas VanPypen with three.

BCI will play North Park on Thursday at North Park at 6 p.m.
