WCSSAA Senior Semifinal #1 - Cameron Heights 65, Grand River 54

Yet again, the Grand River Renegades will have to wait another year for a shot at the school's first ever WCSSAA Senior Boys' basketball title.

The Cameron Heights Golden Gaels, meanwhile, are one step closer to winning that school's first title since 1986 after a 65-54 semifinal win on their home floor over the fifth-seeded Renegades.

The Gaels took it at GRCI early, going on a quick 8-0 run to start the game and actually ending the first quarter up by 17 points (22-5).  The Rens would get back within striking range in the second quarter, thanks to the strong guard play from Osama Qahwash and Brodi Verbiski.  In fact, the Rens went on a 12-2 run to start the frame; however, the Gaels continued to make timely baskets to maintain a 35-22 lead at recess.

The Rens continued to chip away at things in the third quarter, getting things all the way down to 8 (48-40) by the end of that eight-minute session.

The Rens would get even closer in the fourth quarter, trailing by only seven when Osama Qahwash missed a contested layup that could have cut things down to 5.  The Gaels would come back with a two-pointer and a three-ball in quick succession to put things back up to 12 and, essentially, out of reach.

Amjed Osman, Stefan Cucak and Nebojsa Djeric scored 16 each for the Gaels --- whose entire 65 point outing was scored by their starting five.  Furthermore, four of the five CHCI starters shot over 50% from the floor for the game --- a very efficient and effective performance.

You could say that this game came down to shooting, as the Rens shot just 29.5% from the floor compared to the 51.0% posted by the Gaels.

Adnan Shah (9) and Vedran Dmitrovic (8) rounded out the Cameron scoring.

Osama Qahwash could not duplicate his magic from the other night against the Bluevale Knights, as he hit just one three-pointer late in the contest and finished with a team high 12 points on 3-for-13 shooting.  Filip Cvrkalj added 11 for GRCI, while Brodi Verbiski netted 9.

Other Renegade scorers included Mike Peters (8), Daniel Harun (6), #15 (3), Stefan Milanovic (3) and Nikola Bovan (2).

The Gaels, with the win, qualify for next week's CWOSSA "AAAA" championships in Kitchener.  The WCSSAA championship final will be next Wednesday evening, again at Cameron Heights.
