Senior: Knights-Vikes Classic: Trojans Take out Eagles in a Thriller

A match-up that many were intrigued to see played out on Saturday at the annual "Knights-Vikes" senior basketball invitational in Waterloo.

My current #1 (St. Mary's) and #2 (Forest Heights) CWOSSA teams met in the championship final of the tournament, and it did not disappoint --- the Trojans came away with a hard-fought 53-52 victory.  The Eagles had a shot to win late but a Henry Bankazo jumper just rolled off the rim as time wound down in the 4th quarter.

The game featured 2 of the top backcourts in the CWOSSA region, and they actually neutralized each other on the defensive side of the ball.  Javon Masters led the Trojans, but was held to 14 points on the evening.  Alex Thompson, St. Mary's top scorer, had 12.  Adam Voll led the Eagles with 19, while Paul Anderson had a solid outing with another 12 points for Forest Heights.

Earlier on Saturday, the Trojans defeated Waterloo Bluevale 37-23 in one semifinal with Masters (14) and Juwan Miller (9) leading the way.  Perrin Smith had a game-high 16 for Bluevale.

The Eagles took the other semifinal 56-49 over Waterloo CI, although the Eagles did trail by 5 points in the second half.  The Vikes, playing without forward Jacob Ranton (knee) had a coming-out party from forward Dani Elgadi who pumped home a senior career-high 33 points in the win.  Zach Totzke added 8 for WCI, while SMHS received 13 from rookie Telloy Simon and 11 from Voll.

Guelph St. James took the consolation championship 41-36 over Sudbury Lockerby.  Mitch Marquis (10) and Liam McCormack (9) led the way for the Lions.
