NAPLES — With his full roster available, coach Tom Schneider of Resurrection Catholic knew his team would be in a better position to win Wednesday’s consolation bracket outing in the Winged Foot Scholarship Foundation Gulfshore Shootout at Golden Gate High. The tournament is presented by the Naples Daily News.
Four players were benched for disciplinary reasons in Tuesday’s loss to Oldsmar Christian. But in the consolation bracket Wednesday, the Phoenix rose up to a 69-42 victory over Palmetto Ridge.
“Having the four guys back today made a big difference,” Schneider said. “We were cookin’ on all cylinders today. It was more up-tempo today, and that suits our style. Palmetto Ridge played some zone against us, and that plays to our strength, too. We’re not afraid to fire it up from outside.”
A cold-shooting Bears team was outscored 17-4 in the final period to account for the wide final margin.
For the Phoenix, Mike Pereria led the way with 16 points, and Tyler Schneider added 10. Javion Morgan was the only play in double figures for Palmetto Ridge (5-10) with 10 points.
Resurrection Catholic (14-6), from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, will play at 9 a.m. Thursday against either Boca Ciega. Palmetto Ridge’s next game will be Friday at 9 a.m.
“On this side of the draw, we have a good chance now to get in four games down here. That’s a good thing,” Schneider said.
