D8 Senior: St. Mary's 51, Resurrection 48

Round one to the Eagles.

The St. Mary's Eagles took charge with a decisive third quarter run and held off a Rez rally late to defeat the Phoenix 51-48 on the road at Resurrection this evening.

Early on, it was a game that neither team seemed interested in winning.  Sloppy play, turnovers, and miscues littered the opening few minutes, before both clubs settled down.  The Eagles were aided by a strong performance off the bench by Telloy Simon, who netted 6 first quarter points, although a three-pointer by Rez's Mark Radcliffe gave the Phoenix a 9-8 lead after one.

The offenses picked up in the second quarter, with St. Mary's Alex Thompson (who played the first half in "loaner shoes" after apparently leaving his behind before the trip over) getting on track after going scoreless over the first 13:00 of the game.  Thompson would go on to net 9 over the final 5:00 of the first half, and the Eagles would take a slim 27-24 lead at the break.

Rez would quickly take the lead back in the 3rd quarter, as the Phoenix exploited 6'7" Cory Kenning matching up with 6'0" grade eleven Chris Cloutier down low.  Two quick buckets there gave Rez the lead back, and they would go on to lead 33-31 before the Eagles went on a massive 11-0 run before the Phoenix got a bucket before the end of the frame to trail 42-35 entering the fourth.

The Eagles extended to a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, before Rez PG John Moi (playing through a thumb injury which he had taped before discarding the wrap at halftime) caught fire.  Down 47-37, Moi nailed one three and then a second in transition on the next possession to quickly cut the deficit down to 4 (47-43).

After an Eagle free throw, ANOTHER Moi three had the lead at 48-46 with 2:30 to play.

Fast forward to under 1:00 to play, with the Eagles in front by 3, 51-48.  With the Eagles in possession after a timeout, Thompson was whistled for a five-second call, giving Rez another chance.  Moi missed a contested three-pointer for the tie, and the Eagles eventually got the ball to Thompson, although after being fouled he missed the front-end of a one-and-one.

With under :10 on the clock, a Resurrection inbounds pass was intercepted by the Eagles' Tyler Hergott, who was fouled with :05 left.  However, he also missed the front-end of a one-and-one, and gave Rez one last opportunity but a heave by big-man Cory Kenning went off the backboard.

Adam Voll, who displayed a strong ability to finish inside and step outside from beyond the arc, finished with a game-high 22 points for St. Mary's.  Thompson added 14 in the win, while Simon had 6, Isaac Lance 5, Chris Cloutier 2 and Henry Bankazo 2.

Moi led Rez with 15, all from beyond the arc.  Also hitting the scoresheet for Rez were Cory Kenning with 8, Tyler Schneider (7), Mike Pereira (6), Cam Gibbs (5), Mark Radcliffe (3), Stephen Cordle (2) and Tyler Bartley (2).

The big difference?  Despite being undersized, the Eagles won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Phoenix 29-21.  In addition, they were the more aggressive team on the evening --- a fact that was emphasized in free-throw attempts.  Though the Eagles only made 12 of their 21 attempts, Resurrection only had a single free-throw attempt the entire contest (that was missed).
