D8 Junior: St. David upsets St. Mary's

So much for perfection.

After picking 15-0 during the first 15 games of the D8 junior season, the St. David Celtics gave me my first incorrect selection as they upset the St. Mary's Eagles 34-32 on the Eagles' home floor today.

This drops the Eagles and Celtics into a tie for 2nd place with identical 4-2 records; however, St. Mary's was victorious in their earlier league game 59-31 and as such would get the higher seed if both teams end the season tied.

Celtic leaders Jake Winter (12) and Tyson Schierholtz (10) were the high scorers for St. David, while St. Mary's was led by Chris Clouthier's 12 points.

In other junior action on Wednesday.....

Reserve guard Ryan DeVega's 23 points were more than enough to put the junior Resurrection Phoenix over Rockway as they demolished the Flames by an 81-16 final. Jordan Fayez had 7 points for Rockway.

In Cambridge, the St. Benedict Saints were able to even up their record on the year by dispatching the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs 42-29. Jessie Sawyer led SBCSS with 10 points, while Ryan Clayton had a 15-point effort for Doyle.

Current D8 Junior Standings:

X = Clinched Playoff Berth

1. Resurrection 6-0 (X)
2. St. Mary's 4-2
3. St. David 4-2
4. St. Benedict 3-3
----
5. Rockway 1-5
6. Mons Doyle 0-6

    Does that clinch Rez first place?

  2. Not yet - though it makes it a better possibility.

    Resurrection is 2 games up in the loss column, and as such would have to lose two of their remaining games (St. David, St. Mary's, St. Benedict, Monsignor Doyle) AND lose the tiebreaker to St. Mary's to finish second.
