In one of 2 D8 games on Monday, the St. Mary's Eagles will travel to Waterloo to take on the St. David Celtics (5:00pm tip time). Both teams have gotten off to great starts, with the Celts winning their first 3 league contests; the Eagles are also sporting an unbeaten (2-0) record on the campaign.
The game is also a rematch of last year's D8 final, a close game that was won by the Celtics.
Look for their initial battle of the 2010 season to be similar in nature. For SDCSS to come out on top again, they'll need to get a big performance from leaders like Tabitha Ziegfriend and they'll also find a way to slow down the St. Mary's offense, which has been firing on all cylinders early and often this year. In their last league affair, the Eagles piled up 66 points against a Resurrection defense that has otherwise been relatively solid.
Another thing to keep in mind is that many "experts" are projecting that these two clubs to meet in the D8 final later this fall ---- so with this game, another league game and then potentially a D8 final on tap, we'll have to see exactly what the coaches decide to show in this contest.
Pick: SMHS
St. Benedict (1-1) at Monsignor Doyle (1-2)
Another very big rivalry game down in Cambridge; early on in the year, it would appear that both clubs will be fighting alongisde Resurrection for the other 2 playoff berths in the D8 league.
Despite losses to both St. Mary's and Resurrection, they've kept things respectable (losing by 15 & 19) and I think they might have enough to get by the Saints. To add to that, they're also playing at home, so I'll put my undefeated record on the line behind the 'Stangs.
Pick: MDCSS
Junior Games
St. Mary's (0-2) at St. David (1-2)
Pick: SDCSS
Big game for both teams here. If the Celtics can win, it would put the top 4 teams in the D8 league (the "playoff positions" so to speak) a full 2 games clear of the bottom couple of teams in the league. Yes, there's still a long way to go, but in my opinion, St. Mary's really needs this game.
I don't think the Celtics will be kind hosts, however, and I look for them to end up on top here.
St. Benedict (2-0) at Monsignor Doyle (2-1)
Pick: SBCSS
The St. Benedict Saints may be one of the "surprise teams" in CWOSSA this season. Though I don't suspect they'll sneak up on the Doyle Mustangs, they do have the firepower to be able to pick up the win here ---- that is, if they're not looking ahead to Wednesday's game with the other undefeated team in D8, Kitchener Resurrection.
