CWOSSA Junior Finals Video....and a Non-Basketball Related Historical Gem

For those of us who couldn't be there back on Monday, here's a bit of video of the CWOSSA "AAAA" Senior final between JF Ross and St. Mary's.

Meanwhile, speaking of YouTube, I came across this historical gem while searching for some of my historical information. Sure, it's a Rogers broadcast of a WCSSAA junior volleyball final, but there's still "some" basketball linkages - future WCI senior basketball stars Mike Crosby and Jon Awad, among others, are featured. Too good not to share:

If anyone has any historical CWOSSA basketball videos that they can dig up (either on YouTube or elsewhere), please let me know!

OFSAA: Seeding Decisions Underway

Fields have now been assembled for the OFSAA A, AA, AAA and AAAA basketball championships which will take place next week around the province.

Now, the big task for tournament organizers is figuring out where to place everyone!

Here's a quick look at our OFSAA teams and where I think they might fit in:

St. Mary's Eagles (Kitchener) - AAAA #1

Key Wins:  Pope John Paul II (Toronto), Anderson CVI (Dyshawn Pierre - DNP), Resurrection x3, JF Ross x3, Waterloo CI, Forest Heights, Sarnia Northern, Centre Wellington.

Notable Losses:  ACMT (Hamilton), Herman (Windsor), Holy Trinity (Oakville), Cardinal Newman, Forest Heights, Notre Dame (Burlington).

My Take:  Going undefeated through league & playoff action (including CWOSSA) was important for this squad, as they hadn't really won the tough games outside of the region (i.e. Windsor tournament).  I see them as a #10 or a #11 seed, but anything in the #9 - #12 range is possible, really.

JF Ross Royals (Guelph) - AAAA #2

Key Wins:  Forest Heights, Loyola (Oakville), Governor Simcoe, Centre Wellington, SJAM, Pine Ridge (exhibition), IE Weldon - Lindsay (AAA OFSAA Qualifier), St. Anne (Windsor).

Notable Losses:  St. Mary's (Kitchener) x3, Centre Wellington, Centennial, Grand River, Pope John Paul, London Banting, Sarnia Northern.

My Take:  Not winning their league title or CWOSSA will obviously affect their ranking.  However, I would expect the Royals to be ranked higher than they were last year or in 2010 (#17 both years).  I'm looking at a #14 seed for the Royals myself, but expect something in that #13 - #15 range.

Jacob Hespeler - AAA

My Take:  The Hawks, making their first appearance, are likely headed for the lower end of the OFSAA rankings --- which isn't necessarily a bad thing the way they played this past weekend.

Several league losses, as well as a few tournament losses (particularly the SBCSS tournament) will likely have them down in the #13-#15 range in what, on paper, looks to be a fairly strong 16-team AAA tournament.

Of course, JHSS didn't have Javon Bryce in all of their games, particularly some of their losses, and now that he's back, perhaps the underdog Hawks can make some noise at the AAA tournament --- especially if a team takes them lightly with their ranking.

Our Lady of Lourdes - AA

After getting some OFSAA experience under their belt last year as a #15 seed (going 1-2 but being up on the #2 seed, St. Basil of SSM by 12 at halftime), I look for Lourdes to have a much better seed this season.

With a league and repeat CWOSSA championship under their belt, I wouldn't be surprised to see this year's version of the Crusaders in the top 10.  I'm looking at them as a #9-#11 seed, personally, but we'll see what the seeding committee has to say about the Crusaders improved resume from a year ago.

Junior: CWOSSA "AAAA" Finals - Results

Going to try the same thing with junior; of course, things are a little more difficult to dig up (especially in newspaper archives).  Here's a quick look at what I've got thus far:

OUA: Former CWOSSA Stars Clean Up Women's Rookie Awards

One former CWOSSA player received OUA West second team all-star recognition, while three other CWOSSA vets were named to the OUA West's 5-player all-rookie team at this morning's all-star announcement.

Starting with the rookies, Laurier rookie Shelby Kurt (WCI '10), who spent a year out west with Simon Fraser softball, was named as the rookie-of-the-year in the division.

As per the OUA release, "for the second straight season the Rookie of the Year award belongs to a Laurier Golden Hawk. Forward Shelby Kurt (Waterloo, Ont.) is this year’s recipient after racking up 233 points in her freshman season. The 6-foot-1 rookie was able to use her size to create several mismatches down low but could also knock down the outside shots, draining 25 three-pointers. Kurt has also been named to the All-Rookie team."

Kurt averaged 11.1 PPG and 4.8 RPG this season.

Also being named to the OUA West all-rookie team were Kayla Santilli (St. John's '11) of Brock University, and Kate MacTavish (KCI '11) out of the University of Guelph.

Santilli notched 7.9 PPG and 2.8 RPG in her first year as a Badger, while MacTavish registered 5.3 PPG and 4.1 RPG.

Another Gryphon, former JF Ross ('08) star Jasmine Douglas, was named as a second-team OUA West all-star after averaging a double-double for the season (11.3 PPG, 10.3 RPG).

Of the above players, only Santilli's Badgers are left in the OUA hunt.  Brock defeated Laurier in an OUA quarter-final, and will be playing the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday in one of two semifinals (Carleton vs. Windsor is the other).

Congratulations to all recipients!

Senior AAAA Final: St. Mary's 79, JF Ross 76

The win by the St. Mary's Eagles in last night's CWOSSA "AAAA" final completed a trio of firsts for their senior boys' basketball team.

Earlier in the day, they secured the first-ever OFSAA berth in school history with a semifinal win over a resilient Centre Wellington Falcons' team (65-61).

Their championship win later on Monday would give them the first CWOSSA senior boys' title in school history, and, lastly, it also made them the first District 8 school to ever win the "AAAA" senior title.

The title game --- arguably one of the best CWOSSA finals in history --- played out on Monday evening in front of a packed house at JF Ross CVI in Guelph, against the host Royals.

The offensive fireworks started early.  On the Eagles' opening possession, Adam Voll slammed home a rim-rattling dunk that gave the Eagles the first basket of the game.

It would be the first of many baskets --- for both teams --- in the opening half.

The play of JF Ross PG Shamlo Saeed was outstanding in the first half; his shooting and finding teammates for open looks would allow the Royals to take a 23-20 edge after the first quarter.

His drive to the basket and a difficult "and one" made things a 26-20 game on the first Ross possession of the second quarter.

The Royals would extend things to double digits a few minutes later, before a St. Mary's three-pointer (by Isaac Lance) and a two-pointer (from Delondo Hibbert) would cut the lead back down to 5 (34-29).

That was short-lived, as the Royals had a six-point possession their very next trip down the floor.

You see, Saeed was fouled (on a very close block/charge call) and went to the line for double-bonus.  Before the free-throws were attempted, Eagle coach Jason Hergott was whistled for a technical for arguing the call.  Saeed converted all four free-throws, and then found Wil De Groot after the Royals got the ball back out of bounds for a lay-in, making the score 40-29 in favour of Ross.

They would extend to their largest lead, 43-31, when Evan Karl hit a three-pointer and 2:00 to go in the half.  Another late three by Jack Cornett would allow Ross to crack the 50 point barrier in a free-wheeling 50-41 first half.

Both teams shot over 50% from the floor in the opening frame, and attempted a combined 29 free-throws.

Saeed had a terrific first-half for Ross, as he finished the opening 16 minutes with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

However, the Royals' scoring touch would desert them for the opening 3:30 of the second half, and the Eagles took advantage, going on a 9-0 run to quickly tie the game up.

After Ross took a 55-50 advantage on a lay-in by Saeed, the Eagles would go on a 9-0 run to take their first lead since the first quarter.  It was keyed by back-to-back "and ones" by Alex Thompson and reserve grade 11 guard Chris Cloutier.

Ross was able to regain the lead late by knocking in three three-pointers in just over 1:00 of game clock.  Three-balls by Cornett, Saeed, and Cornett again (sandwiched around an SMHS basket) turned a 61-57 deficit into a 66-63 lead before St. Mary's Telloy Simon hit a three-pointer of his own to knot things back up at 66.

Ross' Drew Padovan would hit a jumper with time winding down as the Royals took a 2-point edge (68-66) to the final quarter.

The fourth quarter started slowly, with no scoring in the first 3:00 of the frame, although the big play during that time frame was the fact that Ross' Evan Karl, who played such a big role for them throughout the tournament, fouled out with 6:06 still remaining on the clock.

Trey Larue extended things to a 70-66 game, before Alex Thompson (two pointer) and Isaac Lance (two free-throws) tied things up.

We would stay knotted at 70 through to 2:30 to go, when SMHS' Adam Voll hit a turnaround jumper to give the Eagles the lead.  It was short-lived, however, as Saeed went in for a lay-up and was fouled (missing the free-throw), tying the game at 72.

We'd go back-and-forth again after the Centreville connection went to work with Henry Bankazo dropping off a nice dish to Alex Thompson for a basket and foul (2:09 on the clock).

After a free-throw miss, Mike Friesen was fouled right back on the other end and tied things up at 74.

Eventually, after each team had a possession, Henry Bankazo would hit the go-ahead lay-in with under 1:00 to go.  It literally hung on the lip of the rim for over a second, while the Eagle faithful erupted after it eventually dropped through.

Thompson would foul out for St. Mary's back the other way, and Saeed would make 1-of-2 from the line to cut the deficit to 1 (76-75) and just over 30 seconds to play.

With Ross trying to play great defense and force a turnover, Lance would find Bankazo wide-open underneath for a lay-up that pushed the Eagle lead to 3, and 19 seconds left.

Telloy Simon forced a steal, and it looked like SMHS would seal this one --- but he turned the ball over and Chris Cloutier was actually called for an Eagle foul during the turnover.

Wil de Groot hit 1-of-2 for Ross (78-76) and, forced to foul, the Royals sent Lance to the line for St. Mary's and only 3.3 left.  Lance made 1-of-2, to extend to a 79-76 game, and JF Ross did not get a desperation shot attempt off.

The season is not over, though, for the Royals, as they will be making their third consecutive OFSAA appearance.  They do have a few key wins on their resume, including a recent win over Pine Ridge of Pickering, the LOSSA qualifier (JC Richardson and Pickering are in that league).

For St. Mary's, Isaac Lance led the way with a 19-point effort, while Henry Bankazo (15), Alex Thompson (15) and Adam Voll (14) were all in double-figures as well.  Telloy Simon (5), Delondo Hibbert (5), Chris Cloutier (5) and Tyler Hergott (1) rounded out the Eagle scoring.

It should be noted that Voll was a force in the paint all night, and finished with at least 6 blocks, while altering several more attempts.  Meanwhile, Simon, Hibbert, Cloutier and Hergott all provided very valuable contributions off the bench --- Cloutier in particular with some great hustle plays in the second half.

Saeed just missed a triple-double, as he finished with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists --- game highs in all three categories.  Mike Friesen (14) and Jack Cornett (12 on four three-pointers) were the other double-digit Royal scorers; Evan Karl (6), Wil de Groot (6), Trey Larue (6) and Drew Padovan (2) rounded out the JFR offense.

CWOSSA AAAA Junior Final: St. Mary's 66, JF Ross 51

The St. Mary's Eagles got the job done.

The D8 champs pulled away late for a 66-51 victory over the D10 champions, the homecourt JF Ross Royals, in a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate.

After the score was 56-50, the Eagles finished the last 3:17 of regulation by outscoring the Royals 10-1, many of those on free-throws after Ross was forced to foul.

It didn't seem like it would be close early, however.

The Eagles, in fact, started off by scoring the game's first 8 points to take a quick 8-0 lead, but the Royals would eventually find their footing and go on a 10-2 run of their own to knot things up.

The first frame ended with the teams tied at 16.

In the second quarter, Ross' Andrew Folkerson did some serious work inside for the Royals (both scoring and rebounding), and his put-back with 4:00 to go in the quarter gave Ross a 22-20 edge.

The Eagles would regain the lead late in the first-half with some solid full-court pressure that Ross had some issues with.  A couple of steals (and resulting baskets/free-throws) allowed the Eagles to claw out a 27-25 edge at the half.

Folkerson had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Ross in the first-half.

In the second half, the Eagles moved the lead to 4 before Tommy Yanchus drilled a three for Ross to cut things back down to one with 3:30 left.  On the next possession though, Jemari Stephenson hit a three-pointer from the corner and was fouled to restore a 4-point lead.

With the Eagles up 44-39 very late in the third, Walter Zelaya found himself alone in the corner with time ticking down and calmly drilled a three-pointer that gave St. Mary's an 8-point edge entering the fourth.

Zelaya then started the fourth quarter by getting a steal and finding Jermaine Lyle for two, which extended the lead to double-digits.

However, the Eagles allowed the Royals to hang around by taking some quick shots on the offensive end and committing some fouls on the defensive side of the ball.

In fact, if Ross was a bit better from the line on Monday, it could have been a very different game.  As it was, Ross went 0-for-3 in one stretch (a couple being "front ends" of 1-and-1's) while a 1-of-2 trip from Mo Hussien cut the lead down to 49-44 and 5:00 to go.

The Eagles would maintain a "6 to 9" point advantage for the next couple of minutes before Yanchus hit another three-ball to make things 56-50 at the 3:15 mark.

With the score 57-51 and under 2:00 to go, Folkerson missed a contested layup that could have cut things to 4.  This was rebounded by Blumel (who was subsequently fouled), and he extended things to a three-possession game at 58-51.

Folkerson would foul out with 1:11 to go (59-51 SMHS), and the Eagles would score the final 7 points of the contest from the line.

The Eagles made 20-of-33 free-throws, while the Royals were just 7-for-19 from the line in the game.

St. Mary's finished the season with just one loss, an early season one to Grand River in the championship game of the SJAM tournament (although it was without key starter Mike Blumel in their lineup).

Blumel was a beast on Monday, finishing with a 17 point, 14 rebound performance.  Jemari Stephenson led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points (and also finished with a double-double, 11 rebounds).  St. Mary's scoring was completed by Bronson Bothelo (9), Nathan Riley (9), Jermaine Lyle (8 - despite sitting out a stretch of the second half due to injury), and Walter Zelaya (5).

Folkerson had 15 points and an amazing 18 rebounds for Ross, while Mo Hussien had 15 points as well.  Tommy Yanchus was also in double-digits with 10, while other Royals on the scoresheet were Greg Schwan (4), Vlad Vamanu (4), Daniel Street (2) and Nathan Earley (1).

The win was St. Mary's second ever CWOSSA "AAAA" championship (2008) and marked the 4th time in the last 5 years that a D8 team hoisted the AAAA plaque (SMHS - 2008, RCSS - 2009 & 2010).  The Eagles were also runners-up a season ago to Forest Heights.

Guelph Mercury: Crusaders Breeze to Senior Title

Article By:  Tony Saxon

GUELPH — Two down, one to go.

The Lourdes Crusaders achieved the second of three goals for this season Monday night in the Bishop Macdonell high school gym, cruising to a 68-48 victory over Walkerton’s Sacred Heart Crusaders in the regional CWOSSA AA senior boys basketball final.

Next up on the to-do list is to improve on last year’s showing at the provincial OFSAA AA tournament next week in St. Catharines.

“We wanted to win District 10, win CWOSSA and then get to the playoff round at OFSAA,” coach Scott Robinson said.

“We only lost one player from last year. Everyone else came back and we have four new juniors so I’d say we’re a better team than last year. Certainly more experienced,” Robinson said.

Lourdes went 1-2 at last year’s OFSAA tournament. He’s hoping the Crusaders will be seeded in the top 10 when round-robin play gets underway Monday.

“We’ve had a really good year,” said guard Mike Finoro, who led all scorers with 18 points in Monday’s championship game.

“We’re pretty much the same team, but we have better chemistry. We’re also peaking at the right time and we hope we can carry that into OFSAA.”

After hanging with Lourdes for the first six or seven minutes of the game, Sacred Heart proved little match for the balanced, deep and athletic Guelph squad.

Guelph led 22-12 after one quarter and 40-22 after two.

Sacred Heart actually outscored Lourdes 11-10 in the third quarter, as Robinson went deep into his bench to spread the playing time, but Lourdes bounced back and finished things off with an 18-point fourth quarter.
Sharieff Peru (12) and Jordan Trimble (11) also hit double figures for Lourdes.

Benjamin Carroll had 17 to lead Sacred Heart in scoring.

While pleased with the offensive showing, Robinson wasn’t too thrilled with his team’s defensive effort.
He acknowledged that his players were likely looking beyond the CWOSSA final once they established a healthy lead, but he cautioned against thinking it’s okay to turn on the defence when needed.

“Competition definitely gets tougher from here on end and the longer you let a team hang around, the more confident an underdog gets,” the coach said. “Everyone likes to play offence. It’s the real champions that play with the same intensity at both ends of the floor.”

Earlier in the day Lourdes beat Owen Sound 68-57 in the semifinals. Sacred Heart advanced by beating Wellington Heights 68-31.

Guelph Mercury: Crusader Juniors Go on a Tear to Easily Earn Crown

Article By:  Tony Saxon

GUELPH — The Lourdes Crusaders juniors made it a Crusader sweep at the CWOSSA AA basketball championships Monday.

Lourdes went on a 17-0 run to open the championship game against the Kincardine Knights and never looked back, getting their name on the CWOSSA championship shield for the first time since 1993 with a 57-27 win.

“Age-wise this is still a really young team,” Lourdes coach Mark Tonizzo said at the Bishop Macdonell gym where the tournament was held.

“Four of our starters are only in Grade 9. If we keep all four together and get some good kids coming up from elementary school we should be even better next season.”

The Crusaders’ toughest game of the day came in the afternoon semifinal, a 60-45 win over Owen Sound.

Tonizzo said they changed the format of the tournament this year and that Owen Sound was probably the strongest of all the opponents. He said Owen Sound should have probably been in the final.

Kincardine beat Norwell 47-40 in the other semifinal.

“We won by 15 in the semis but it was definitely our toughest game,” he said. “It would be nice to have the top two teams in the final.”

The Guelph school led 20-3 after eight minutes and 25-11 at halftime.

Kincardine showed some spunk in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to just seven points with around three minutes left in the quarter. But the Crusaders’ Xavier Guaca came down and drilled a big three pointer to reestablish the double-digit lead and they never looked back.

Guaca led all scorers with 16 points. Noel Amaya and Brandon Vongphadky both added nine.

Lourdes used a balanced attack, hitting both outside and inside against the overmatched Knights. The comfortable lead also allowed him to use his whole bench.

“We only really have one or two pure post players. We have a whole bunch of inbetween guys. Guys that can play inside and out,” Tonizzo said.

Brantford Expositor: Silver Lining for Junior Trojans

Article By:  Darryl Smart

The North Park Collegiate Trojans almost played the role of giant killer Monday night during the CWOSSA junior boys AAA basketball final.

Playing in front of a home crowd, the No. 3 Trojans, fresh off a huge 55-36 semifinal win earlier in the day over No. 2 St. David's of Waterloo, almost pulled another upset out of their hats.

Unfortunately for the host team, the No. 1 St. James Catholic High School Lions rallied in the fourth quarter to win the CWOSSA title with a 52-43 win.

"Of course, we're all a little disappointed but we're all really proud of how we played," Trojans Matt Minutillo said. "We worked really hard and had a great tournament. Unfortunately we fell behind at the wrong time and couldn't come back."

After going toe-to-toe with the No. 1 seed and playing to a 14-14 tie after one quarter, the Trojans surged to a 25-21 halftime lead.

But the high-powered Lions stormed back to take a 35-32 lead after three quarters and held on to it despite several runs by the Trojans.

"Coach told us the whole tournament to force as many turnovers as we can and they'll turn into easy offence," Minutillo said. "We were able to do that against them and it kept us in the game. Unfortunately we turned the ball over a couple of times and they took advantage of that to pull away."

Minutillo, who led the Trojans scoring 15 points, said the energy from the bench and the home crowd really helped them throughout their improbable voyage to the final.

"They really got us pumped and gave us that extra boost," Minutillo said. "It helped us get the momentum, especially in the final."

Coach Gord Petersen said that, despite a couple of turnovers, he couldn't be happier with the way his team played.

"It's unfortunate that we didn't protect the ball as much as we should have but the kids worked hard," Petersen said. "This is a team (St. James) that beat us by 29 earlier in the season. We played well and almost pulled it out. The score certainly wasn't an indication of how close the score was."

To get to the final, Trojans exercised some demons in defeating St. David's - a team they lost twice this season during tournament play - in the semifinal, and outlasted Huron Heights in double overtime during the preliminary game.

"The double overtime really gave us a lot of confidence," Minutillo said. "It was a great start to the tournament for us."

The Grade 9 student said it really set a tone for their semifinal date with St. David's.

"They were a team we lost to a couple of times and we really played hard," Minutillo said. "It was a great feeling to beat them and gave us a lot of confidence heading into the final."

With the loss, Minutillo, who is one of only two returning next season is already looking forward to the task at hand.

"We'll have a good team next year and try and take another run at it," Minutillo said. "We learned a lot from this season."

Brantford Expositor: Senior Trojans See Title Run Ended

Article By:  Darryl Smart

It wasn't the story many high school basketball fans thought they'd be reading, except if you're a Jacob Hespeler Hawks supporter.

Thanks to a 32-point effort by point guard Javon Bryce, the No. 3 Hawks upset the two-time defending CWOSSA AAA senior boys basketball champs and No. 2 North Park Collegiate Trojans 64-62 in the semifinal Monday.

"It's safe to say we're all really disappointed right now," Trojans veteran Marcus Hamilton said. "Losing is never a good feeling."

And the way the Trojans lost their first game on home turf in over three years was even more heart wrenching.

Despite missing six easy layups, the Trojans dominated down low and built up a 13-10 first quarter lead.

But then it became the Bryce show, as the slick-moving Hawks point guard poured in 10 second-quarter points, including an emphatic dunk that seemed to swing all of the momentum their way.

"Their point guard put the team on his shoulders and carried them," Trojans coach Todd Andrew said. "You can't take anything away from them. They played a good game."

Although the Hawks had all of the momentum and a 30-21 lead at the half, the Trojans came out of the break with purpose and showed why they've won this championship the last two seasons.

A Hamilton three-pointer, followed by a Marcus Jones steal to A.K. Rai, who went in for the layup, and then a Logan Varga jumper after another Hawks turnover all but erased the deficit in the first two minutes of the second quarter.

Once the Trojans had the lead, Bryce again took over and made the defending champs pay for several costly turnovers and the Trojans inability to hit easy shots in the fourth quarter. Bryce poured in 16 points in the final quarter to help punch his team's ticket into Monday's final against Galt Collegiate, who upset the No. 1 seeded Centre Dufferin 62-49 in the other semi earlier Monday.

"We made shots early but weren't able to make them late," Hamilton, who led all Trojans scorers with 22 points. "(Marcus) Jones did a great job defending him (Bryce). He had one of those games where everything was going in. That's the way it goes sometimes. They just had a better game than us."

Despite the loss and obvious disappointment, Andrew said his players have nothing to be ashamed of.

"Of course they're disappointed right now, but they have a lot to be proud of," Andrew said. "Winning three-straight BCSSAA titles and two CWOSSA championships in a row is a real accomplishment. Not a lot of teams can say they set going to OFSAA as a realistic goal every year and we've been able to do that."

Andrew also said how proud he is of how the players on the team have grown, especially Hamilton and
Varga, the two players who have been with the team for the incredible three-year run.

"I understand why Marcus and Logan would be so disappointed right now," Andrew said.

"But as a coach, to see guys like that grow from young boys with good athletic ability to great young men and basketball players is great to see. Win or lose, it's always nice to see a group like this get the opportunities they've had and grow as people and basketball players."

In the gold medal game, Jacob Hespeler beat Galt Collegiate 53-52.
