AAAA Senior Game #1 - JF Ross 58, Forest Heights 53

The "pool of death" started out with a great contest on Saturday morning.

The JF Ross Royals found themselves down early (16-8) but battled back to assume a 31-26 halftime lead and would hold that margin through the second half for a 58-53 final.

Ross tried to get the home crowd energized early, but Mike Friesen just missed slamming home an alley-oop pass from Shamlo Saeed that surely would have put the pro-Ross contingent into a frenzy.

On the flip side, Adrian Russell was playing some great defense (as usual) for Forest Heights.  He had two steals that he took the other way for lay-ins to help the Trojans lead 18-13 after the first.

However, the home squad would shift the game by going on a 10-0 run to open the second quarter, capped off by an "and one" from 5th year player Evan Karl, as the Royals led 31-26 at recess.

Ross could have blown it wide open in the third quarter (32-26 at the time) but had a few wide-open three-point looks not go down.  They would, however, eventually start clicking on offense and extended things to a 41-29 lead midway through the quarter.

The Trojans would chip away (to 43-37 after three) and continued the comeback in the fourth.  A Juwan Miller bucket got them back to within 2 (45-43) but the poise of the Royals --- they have been through CWOSSA and to OFSAA two consecutive years --- held them steady in the fourth.

5th year star guard Shamlo Saeed made an "and one" with 2:37 to go to push the lead to 53-46.

Forest Heights would make one late push, cutting things to 53-51 and under a minute to go after 5 consecutive points from Miller.

The "TSN turning point" occurred after Forest Heights, forced to foul, put Mike Friesen at the line.  Though he would make 1-of-2 (54-51), Evan Karl vaccuumed in the rebound and the Trojans were forced to send him to the line, where he made 2 (56-51).

Following a late Trojan basket, Mike Friesen iced the game with 2 free-throws in the dying seconds for the final margin of victory (58-53).

For JF Ross, Evan Karl was tremendous in the victory.  He made inside shots, mid-range jumpers and converted 7-of-8 free throws for a 26-point total; he also added 7 rebounds.

Shamlo Saeed added 12 points, while Mike Friesen (9), Wil de Groot (9) and Trey Larue (2) rounded out the Ross scoring.

Juwan Miller led Forest Heights in scoring (22) and rebounding (9).  Javon Masters added 17, while Adrian Russell was also in double figures with 10.  FHCI's scoring was rounded out by Dylan George and Ian Anderson, who had 2 each.
