After a thrilling opener in Gym 2 at JF Ross, fans were treated to more of the same in the second game of the CWOSSA championships.
Wade Uhrig hit a game-tying three in the dying seconds as the CWDHS Falcons forced overtime, but fell to the SJAM Highlanders 64-59 in the second consecutive "AAAA" senior barnburner.
The 'Landers found themselves down 13-11 after one, partially because their usual strength (the three-pointer) was absent in the early going (0-of-7). Reid Goindi would get a steal and a score to put CWDHS up 15-11, before SJAM closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 22-17 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, Quinn Turner, who attempted just two shots combined through SJAM's semifinal win (WCI) and finals loss (FHCI) asserted his size advantage and contributed four quick points as part of a 6-0 run that pushed things to 34-26 in favour of SJAM.
A Nathaniel Ellis steal and lay-in gave the 'Landers a double-digit lead (41-31) early in the fourth.
However, CWDHS continued to fight.
A Wade Uhrig two-pointer capped an 8-0 CW run that made it 43-39. Following a Turner putback for SJAM (45-39), Jacob Hewitt-Smith canned a three-pointer for the Falcons and cut things down to 2.
Turner again got inside for another lay-in, and Theshawn Barry had an easy bucket off of an inbounds to give SJAM a 49-43 edge with 1:55 to go.
Nearly a minute later, Reid Goindi hit a three for the Falcons to cut things to 3, and then CW forced a turnover. However, a turnover the other way led to Ellis finishing with a nice dunk for SJAM and a 51-48 lead.
Both teams would exchange free-throws (53-50 SJAM) before Uhrig was found open in the corner and drilled a three just before the final buzzer --- actually 1.6 seconds as SJAM called timeout and had one last crack at it but Ben Reyhani's heave hit the front of the rim.
In OT, CWDHS did hold a lead but SJAM tied things at 57 as they lobbed a nice pass over the top on the block to Ellis who converted. The Falcons would score on a Gavin McNamara lay-in on a nice pass from Goindi, but that edge (59-57) would be their final of the game.
Ben Reyhani drove in for two and then made a deep three with around 1:00 to go to give SJAM a 62-59 lead, and they would tack on two free-throws late for the final margin.
Reyhani led SJAM with 24 points, while three other Highlanders were also in double figures --- Nathaniel Ellis (13), Quinn Turner (13) and Theshawn Barry (11). Sam Woods (3) rounded out the scoring for the double-blue.
The starting five accounted for all of CWDHS' points in this one --- Reid Goindi (19), Wade Uhrig (15), Jacob Hewitt-Smith (10), Tim Francis (9) and Gavin McNamara (6).
