In a high-octane, high-energy D8 junior final at the University of Waterloo this evening, the St. David Celtics traded punches with the top-ranked St. Mary's Eagles early before the Eagles pulled away to a 79-54 victory, capturing their second consecutive D8 title in the process.
The first quarter was arguably the most entertaining quarter of basketball I have seen --- junior or senior --- in CWOSSA this season. Both teams came out gunning, with the Eagles' Mike Blumel and Nathan Riley twisting their way inside for buckets, while the Celts' George Dumitru didn't mind that the teams were using the university three-point line as he hit three consecutive three-pointers to start his night.
Within the first four minutes, the teams had combined for 29 points, and it was 23-21 St. Mary's after one!
The Eagles asserted control of the contest starting in the second, and they did so on the defensive end, giving up only one point for 6:15 of the second quarter while scoring 13 of their own and extending to a 36-22 advantage. By halftime, the Eagles had taken a 43-26 edge.
The Celtics continued to fight, and had things within "striking distance" (about 12-13 points) a couple of times in the second half. In the end, the CWOSSA #1 Eagles had too much offensive ability in this one as they pulled away before everyone on both benches saw action late.
Things are not all bad for St. David though, as they are projected to be one of the top 2-3 seeds at "AAA" CWOSSA next week (while the Eagles will be participating at AAAA CWOSSA in Guelph). Furthermore, their two top scorers, George Dumitru and DaShaun Lalor, are only in grade 9 --- so the Celtics are projected to be a very strong junior club next season.
Scoring for the Eagles were Nathan Riley (21 -- in addition to 6 rebounds and 7 assists), Mike Blumel (20), Jemari Stephenson (18), Walter Zelala (8), Jermain Lyle (6), Bronson Bothelo (3), Jordan Anao (2) and Rehan Khan (1).
For the Celts, Dumitru (17) and Lalor (16) paced the way. Other St. David players on the scoresheet included Kwame Adam (5), James McBride (4), Mitchell Lavigne (4), Christopher Dye (3), Alec Scheffler (2), Thomas Lim (2) and Wesley Naus (1).
