Busy day today.
By the end of it, we will have 6 CWOSSA champions (junior & senior) and 4 OFSAA qualifiers (2 AAAA, 1 in AA & AAA) to announce.
Here's a brief look at some of the action. Stay tuned to @cwossabball on Twitter for updates during the day.
AA
After Friday's "snow day" postponed the one-day "AA" basketball tournament, things are set to go for today in Guelph at Bishop Macdonell HS.
The Lourdes Crusaders enter as the heavy favourites in both the junior and senior divisions; in fact, it would be a major upset if the Crusaders didn't come home with at least one title.
The tournament format is such that the semifinal opponents "rotate" each year --- this year, it would appear that the two best teams in both the junior and senior competitions will square off in the semifinals.
Owen Sound CVI (13-0 BAA in junior and senior) will battle Lourdes in both junior and senior semifinal action.
AAA
The first-round of action (Saturday) went according to form as the top seeds advanced through on both junior and senior sides of the draw.
Morning junior semifinals are (1) St. James vs. (4) Galt and (2) St. David vs. (3) North Park. If I had to pick an "upset", I'd take the NPC Trojans on their home floor today. The top-seeded Lions, meanwhile, are my pick to capture the title.
On the senior side, top-seed Centre Dufferin will take on (4) Galt and (2) North Park plays (3) Jacob Hespeler. The two senior semifinals could certainly go either way, depending on which of these teams is "on" today. I'll take CDDHS and NPC to advance through to the finals, but I'll go with the Trojans on their home floor to capture the CWOSSA title.
AAAA
Semifinals are underway in the junior ranks, where St. Mary's will battle Eastwood in an all-Kitchener battle and Grand River takes on host Guelph JF Ross.
I look for SMHS and GRCI to advance through to the finals, but you can't discount the home school in front of a large crowd of students.
Should those teams advance through, I think the finals is a toss-up but slight edge to St. Mary's.
