Each year for the last 11 years, the WCSSAA champion has gone to qualify for the OFSAA championships in either AAAA or AAA (2007 - Southwood).
With Forest Heights' ouster from the CWOSSA championships on Saturday, that string was snapped. WCSSAA's consecutive OFSAA appearances streak is also in jeopardy, unless SJAM can come through against JF Ross (AAAA) or lower-seeds Jacob Hespeler and Galt can string together two consecutive "upsets" (as far as rankings are concerned) on the senior AAA side.
Now, what are some other things for basketball history buffs to keep an eye on today? Let's have a look.
Senior - AAAA
School History
- The winner of the CWDHS-St. Mary's AAAA senior game will qualify for OFSAA; the appearance will be the first OFSAA apperance for either school in their history.
- JF Ross, St. Mary's and CWDHS have never captured an OFSAA "AAAA" title, while St. Mary's and CWDHS have not won a senior CWOSSA title, period. SJAM is the lone previous winner (2009).
- JF Ross has been the runner-up in CWOSSA "AAAA" the last 2 seasons and is seeking a third-consecutive OFSAA appearance.
League History
- In AAAA, a WCSSAA team has qualified for OFSAA each year since 2002. An SJAM loss (to JF Ross) in the semifinals would end that streak.
- St. Mary's is seeking to become the first D8 school since 2003 (St. Benedict) to qualify for AAAA OFSAA. Of course, some other schools in D8 (Rockway - A, St. David - AAA) have qualified for OFSAA in the meantime.
- D10 has sent a representative to OFSAA (Centennial 07-09, JF Ross 10 & 11) each of the last 5 years. A semifinal win by either CWDHS or JF Ross would continue this streak.
Junior - AAAA
School History
- This is the 25th anniversary of Eastwood's last CWOSSA basketball championship (1987).
- JF Ross (2007) and St. Mary's (2008) are prior CWOSSA "AAAA" champions, while ECI and GRCI (last title - AAA 1996) are seeking their first AAAA title.
- St. Mary's is seeking their second consecutive CWOSSA medal.
League History
- D10's last championship was in 2007 (JF Ross).
- A D8 team has made the championship final each of the last 4 years (SMHS 08, RCSS 09 & 10, SMHS 11).
- A WCSSAA team has made the championship final each of the last 4 years (GRCI 08 & 09, WCI 10, FHCI 11).
General History
- Kitchener high schools have captured the last 4 "AAAA" junior titles (St. Mary's - 08, Resurrection - 09 & 10, Forest Heights - 11). With 3 Kitchener schools in the semifinals, this streak has a solid chance of continuing.
- A CWOSSA medal by either Grand River (2 silver) or St. Mary's (1 gold, 1 silver) would put them in first place in the overall "AAAA" junior medal historical standings. Of course, should they both advance to the final they would be tied for first place with 3.
Senior - AAA
School History
- Galt, Jacob Hespeler, and Centre Dufferin have never won a CWOSSA senior basketball title.
- North Park has won 2 consecutive CWOSSA "AAA" championships. Assumption was the last school to win 3 consecutive (2003-05).
League History
- With NPC winning the last two CWOSSA titles, D5 (BCSSAA) has represented "AAA" CWOSSA the last two years.
- A D4 team has never represented CWOSSA at "AAA" OFSAA --- or any OFSAA (A, AA, AAAA) for that matter.
- A WCSSAA school has not represented CWOSSA at OFSAA in 5 years (Southwood, 2007).
Junior - AAA
School History
- Previous CWOSSA championships: North Park (2010), St. David (2008), St. James (1999).
- Galt has never won a junior CWOSSA basketball championship.
League History
- A win by North Park would tie BCSSAA for most titles since 2003 with WCSSAA (4).
Senior - AA
School History
- Lourdes is seeking its second consecutive "AA" senior title (and second consecutive OFSAA appearance).
- OSCVI last won the title in 2010, while Wellington Heights and Sacred Heart have not won a CWOSSA senior championship.
League History
- D10 (Bishop Mac and Lourdes) have won 6 of the last 7 CWOSSA titles.
- D4 has never captured a CWOSSA "AA" title.
- BAA has won one
Junior - AA
School History
- Lourdes is seeking their first CWOSSA title since 1993 at the Junior "AA" level.
- Norwell and OSCVI have never won a CWOSSA junior title.
- Kincardine won "AA" junior CWOSSA back in 1998.
League History
- D4 has never captured a CWOSSA "AA" title.
- D10 has captured the last 4 "AA" titles (John Diefenbaker - 2007 champions).
