Junior: Holy Trinity (Oakville) Take Luke Santi Memorial Title

On Saturday evening in Kitchener, two top-ranked GTA schools --- Holy Trinity (Oakville) and Jean Vanier (Richmond Hill) --- played a terrific championship final at the Resurrection Phoenix/Luke Santi Memorial Junior Boys Invitational Tournament hosted by Resurrection CSS.

As noted in my previous postings, the tournament is named for Luke Santi, a former Resurrection student and junior basketball player (D8 all-star in '07) who passed away in his grade 11 year after a battle with cancer.

Jean Vanier led most of the way, although by slim margins. They held a 26-22 lead at half, and led by one after three. After trailing by as many as 5 in the final quarter, Holy Trinity was able to get some great execution down the stretch and had things tied at 48-48 with under 1:00 to play.

After Jean Vanier did not score on their possession, the Titans got the ball to Lucas Orlita who was fouled on a jumper with :05 left --- he converted one of two free throws for the final margin (49-48).

For Holy Trinity, Kimbal Mackenzie (Tournament MVP) led the way with 24 points, Orlita had 12 and Brandon Cyrus 10.

Jaaden Lewis netted 13 for Jean Vanier, Nick McKee had 11 (all in the first half) and JJ Silva finished with 10.

Trinity advanced to the finals by beating Bishop Mac (Guelph) 61-45. The Titans trailed 45-44 with 6:30 left but closed the game on a 17-0 run that was started on a dunk by grade 9 G/F Brandon Cyrus.  The athletic Cyrus had three dunks in the tournament and even registered a goaltending call in the final!

Jean Vanier defeated Our Lady of Lourdes (Guelph), 67-45 in the other semifinal.
