One former CWOSSA player received OUA West second team all-star recognition, while three other CWOSSA vets were named to the OUA West's 5-player all-rookie team at this morning's all-star announcement.
Starting with the rookies, Laurier rookie Shelby Kurt (WCI '10), who spent a year out west with Simon Fraser softball, was named as the rookie-of-the-year in the division.
As per the OUA release, "for the second straight season the Rookie of the Year award belongs to a Laurier Golden Hawk. Forward Shelby Kurt (Waterloo, Ont.) is this year’s recipient after racking up 233 points in her freshman season. The 6-foot-1 rookie was able to use her size to create several mismatches down low but could also knock down the outside shots, draining 25 three-pointers. Kurt has also been named to the All-Rookie team."
Kurt averaged 11.1 PPG and 4.8 RPG this season.
Also being named to the OUA West all-rookie team were Kayla Santilli (St. John's '11) of Brock University, and Kate MacTavish (KCI '11) out of the University of Guelph.
Santilli notched 7.9 PPG and 2.8 RPG in her first year as a Badger, while MacTavish registered 5.3 PPG and 4.1 RPG.
Another Gryphon, former JF Ross ('08) star Jasmine Douglas, was named as a second-team OUA West all-star after averaging a double-double for the season (11.3 PPG, 10.3 RPG).
Of the above players, only Santilli's Badgers are left in the OUA hunt. Brock defeated Laurier in an OUA quarter-final, and will be playing the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday in one of two semifinals (Carleton vs. Windsor is the other).
Congratulations to all recipients!
