D8: Playoff Matchups Set

Neither of the games on the D8 senior side of the slate were in doubt yesterday as St. Mary's dominated Monsignor Doyle and Resurrection cruised past St. Benedict.

In the former, St. Mary's received double-digit efforts from Avery Sutton (16), Jamari Stephenson (11) and Tesloth Simon (11) in an 88-36 win over Monsignor Doyle.  Ryan Stafford led the 'Stangs with 7, while Yaser Seyed and Sohrob Sultani had 6 each.

The win by St. Mary's was their 34th straight D8 league or playoff win; it also marked their third straight perfect D8 regular season (2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14).

The other tilt on Monday saw Resurrection got off to a fast start in a 74-42 win over St. Benedict, with Patric McGlynn contributing 26 in the win for the victors.  Spencer Marshall led the Saints with an 18-point effort.

As for the standings:

Senior - Division A
1.  St. Mary's 9-0
2.  Resurrection 7-2
3.  Mons. Doyle 5-4
4.  St. Benedict 3-6

Senior - Division B
1.  St. David 4-4
2.  Rockway 1-6
3.  Woodland 0-7

There is one game left on the schedule, a "B" Division game between Rockway and Woodland, which still means the last playoff spot isn't yet decided.  Here's the quarterfinal matchups:

(A1) St. Mary's - Bye
(A2) Resurrection - Bye
(A3) Mons. Doyle vs. (B2) RMC/WCHS
(A4) St. Benedict vs. (B1) St. David

Junior
In junior action yesterday, the CWOSSA #1 St. Benedict Saints outlasted the CWOSSA #3 Resurrection Phoenix at home in a 43-40 thriller, clinching the #2 seed in the D8 playoffs.

The game was tied 22-22 at halftime, before the Saints used a third quarter run to take a 10-point lead.  However, the Phoenix didn't go away and chipped into that deficit, trailing by 3 points with less than :30 to go.

Rez got a steal with about :15 on the clock but were unable to get anything better than a contested three-pointer which was off the mark, resulting in the final margin.

Alex Douglas led SBCSS and all scorers with 17 points, while Zubair Seyed had 9 and Carter Johnson 7 for the Saints.  Jake Rush and Prince Dang notched 9 each for Resurrection, with Ali Rashid adding 7.

In Monday's other game, Adham Eleeda scored 15 and Minas Abara added 11 as the St. Mary's Eagles dispatched the St. David Celtics 64-40.  Mason Cumming had a game-high 19 points for the Celtics.

D8 Junior Standings - A Division
1.  St. Mary's 8-1
2.  St. Benedict 7-2
3.  Resurrection 6-3
4.  St. David 3-6

D8 Junior Standings - B Division1.  Mons. Doyle 3-5
2.  Rockway 2-5
3.  Woodland 0-7

Although there is one game left (RMC/WCHS), the first-round playoff matchups have already been determined:

(A1) St. Mary's - Bye
(A2) St. Benedict - Bye
(A3) Resurrection vs. (B2) Rockway
