D8 Senior: Phoenix Hold Off Mustangs At Home

The senior Resurrection Phoenix got a lesson in "taking your foot off the pedal" on Wednesday afternoon.

After leading 29-13 at half, a strong third quarter by the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs (mostly against the Phoenix bench) got them right back in the ball game.

With 5:00 to go in the game, the Phoenix had basically given up their entire lead (43-41).  The game was actually tied (47-47) with about :30 to go, before Rez's Patric McGlynn was fouled on a drive attempt.  After converting both free-throws (49-47), McGlynn added 2 more from the line following a Monsignor Doyle miss on the other end.

Needless to say, the 'Stangs gave Rez something to think about in what could potentially (or likely) be a semifinal D8 matchup.

In other senior action on Wednesday:

St. Mary's 86, St. Benedict 26
My Pick:  SMHS by 38
The Eagles showed no ill-effects of the holiday lay-off, as they handled the Saints with ease on Wednesday.  Tesloth Simon (17) led St. Mary's while Khiem Tran had 8 for St. Benedict.

St. David 78, Rockway 36
My Pick:  SDCSS by 27
Alec Scheffler had 18, while Mack Smith added 16 and Cole Brenner was also in double-figures for the Celtics with 10.  Matthew Steinman had 6 for the Flames.

D8 Standings - A Division
1.  St. Mary's 7-0
2.  Resurrection 6-1
3.  Mons. Doyle 4-3
4.  St. Benedict 3-4

D8 Standings - B Division
1.  St. David 3-4
2.  Rockway 1-6
3.  Woodland 0-6
