The St. Benedict Saints continued their strong season, moving to 22-2 on the year and improving the record of the D8 junior league to 3-1 against GTA Top 10 teams this season by winning the Tony Marcotullio Invitational in London over the weekend.
In the semifinals, St. Benedict topped the hosts HB Beal (currently 1st place / undefeated in TVRAA league play) by a 53-28 final; the Saints were paced in that one by double-digit efforts from Alex Douglas (20) and Zubair Seyed.
In the final, SBCSS took on GTA #10-ranked Upper Canada College where they didn't get off to the greatest of starts, trailing UCC by a 26-16 score at halftime. However, a strong third quarter (22-13 SBCSS) basically wiped away that deficit and set the stage for an exciting final frame.
With less than 10 seconds to go, the Saints trailed by 1 but Marcus Penaloza came up with a steal, followed by a dish to PG Zubair Seyed who was fouled with :03 on the clock. He calmly stepped to the line and knocked both home, cementing a 42-41 victory for the Saints. Seyed finished with 12 points, to go alongside Alex Douglas' team-high 15.
