The St. Benedict Saints continued their strong season, moving to 22-2 on the year and improving the record of the D8 junior league to 3-1 against GTA Top 10 teams this season by winning the Tony Marcotullio Invitational in London over the weekend.In the semifinals, St. Benedict topped the hosts HB Beal (currently 1st place / undefeated in TVRAA league play) by a 53-28 final; the Saints were paced in that one by double-digit efforts from Alex Douglas (20) and Zubair Seyed.
In the final, SBCSS took on GTA #10-ranked Upper Canada College where they didn't get off to the greatest of starts, trailing UCC by a 26-16 score at halftime. However, a strong third quarter (22-13 SBCSS) basically wiped away that deficit and set the stage for an exciting final frame.
With less than 10 seconds to go, the Saints trailed by 1 but Marcus Penaloza came up with a steal, followed by a dish to PG Zubair Seyed who was fouled with :03 on the clock. He calmly stepped to the line and knocked both home, cementing a 42-41 victory for the Saints. Seyed finished with 12 points, to go alongside Alex Douglas' team-high 15.
