For the first time in 15 years, the St. James Lions are CWOSSA Senior Boys' champions.
The Lions, whose last CWOSSA title was in 1999 (the year that they also won OFSAA with a starting lineup that featured two NCAA D1 players and two CIS players), defeated Brantford St. John's 50-41 in the "AAA" CWOSSA final yesterday evening at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Guelph.
The Lions were stifling on defense through the first two and a half quarters, holding the Green Eagles to just 21 points (39-21 St. James) midway through the third.
A 15-4 Green Eagle run, though, made this one a game early in the fourth but St. John's was unable to make any further headway by the final buzzer.
In semifinal action earlier in the day on Monday, St. James topped Kitchener CI (46-36) while the Green Eagles got past a tough Galt Collegiate squad, 46-41.
With the win, the Lions will make an appearance at the "AAA" OFSAA tournament next week in Welland.
