BAA: Walkerton Takes Title over Owen Sound

True or False:  Yesterday marked the first Senior Boys' BAA title in Walkerton Riverhawks' history?

Trick question.

The Riverhawks (known as the Raiders until the new K-12 Walkerton District Community School opened in 2012) took home the championship banner following a hard-fought 52-48 win over Owen Sound CVI.  As they play in separate divisions, both teams were undefeated in league play heading into the championship finale.

Walkerton's JD West, who will play at Laurentian University next year, was dominant in yesterday's "Final Four" event --- he scored 24 in the championship final after scoring 37 points in Walkerton's semifinal win over St. Mary's of Owen Sound (60-41).

Braden Boley was best for OSCVI in the championship final with 18 points, while Lucas Rintoul had 12 for St. Mary's against Walkerton in the semifinal.

Owen Sound advanced to the final with a 67-55 win over Saugeen DSS.  Lauchlin Elder had 16 for the Falcons, while Shannin Bluebird led all scorers with 18 for the Royals.

Walkerton will be a favourite at "A" CWOSSA, while OSCVI advances to "AA" CWOSSA.  As losers of the semifinal games, St. Mary's and Saugeen will play a CWOSSA qualifying game next Tuesday (at Saugeen).

Junior
Owen Sound St. Mary's took home the junior title, topping Saugeen 59-51 in the championship game.

St. Mary's "big three" --- Hugh Weichel, Joban Basra and Ethan Woods --- combined for 50 of St. Mary's points in the championship final, after combining for 47 in St. Mary's 61-30 semifinal win over Hanover's John Diefenbaker.

Saugeen topped Georgian Bay 55-33 in the other semifinal.

Both Saugeen and St. Mary's are through to "AA" CWOSSA, while Georgian Bay will be the "A" representative.
