D8: Semifinal Wednesday

The top four seeds in both the D8's junior & senior leagues all advanced through --- relatively handily --- to today's semifinal action.

Senior
(1) St. Mary's vs. (4) St. Benedict
RS:  SMHS 2-0 (64-32, 86-26)
My Pick:  SMHS by 43
There's a reason as to why the games are played but you have to agree that the St. Mary's Eagles are the prohibitive favourites in this one, especially after having beaten SBCSS by 60 (yes, 60) last time out down in Cambridge.  Personally, I expect a better effort out of the Saints here but it won't be enough against the firepower that the Eagles bring to the table.

(2) Resurrection vs. (3) Mons. Doyle
RS:  RCSS 2-0 (69-48, 51-47)
My Pick:  RCSS by 10
The Resurrection Phoenix learned a lesson last time out against the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs, racing to a 16-point halftime lead but then allowing the 'Stangs back in it in the second half.  Lesson learned for Rez, or confidence builder for MDCSS?  We'll surely find out today.  I like the Phoenix in this one, but added motivation to the Mustangs who are trying to make a D8 final for the first time in a long time (ever?).

Junior
(1) St. Mary's vs. (4) St. David
RS:  SMHS 2-0 (71-41, 64-40)
In a league where the top 3 teams also represent the 3 top teams in my most recent CWOSSA ranking, securing the #1 seed in the playoffs is not insignificant as it gives the Eagles an "easier" road to the finals.  We'll see what the Celtics have to say about that but it would be a significant upset if the Eagles didn't advance here.

(2) St. Benedict vs. (3) Resurrection
RS:  1-1 (Rez 47-40, SBCSS 43-40)
Despite losing the +/- to Rez, the Saints split their season series with St. Mary's to earn the #2 D8 seed and a home playoff game.  Two different teams here as far as pace of play is concerned, with the Saints liking to keep games in the 40s (or 30s) while the Phoenix prefer a more uptempo game.  Look for another good battle down in Cambridge today.
