Cal Hager scored 17 points for the Trojans to give North Park a 54-50 win over the St. John's College Green Eagles in Game 2 of the best-of-three series. The Green Eagles won Game 1 67-49.
Game 3 is Wednesday at Pauline Johnson Collegiate.
"I really like how my team responded when I fouled out," Hager said following the game. "They came through for us during the toughest moments of the game.
"The bench brought a lot of energy to the game and to the guys on the floor."
St. John's played a great game, he said.
"But we had the edge tonight," Hager said. "It should be a great final next Wednesday."
Hager was outstanding for the Trojans, who also got huge contributions from Jackson Kingshott and Markus Kunjei.
Kingshott scored a three-point buzzer beater at the end of the first quarter to give the Trojans a 13-8 lead.
After Hager fouled out, Kingshott helped the Trojans with their ball control on offence when the Eagles were making a comeback.
Kunej came up big for the Trojans giving his team a solid second quarter when starter Zach Hamed got into foul trouble. In addition to a basket, Kunej dove to the floor and grabbed a couple of rebounds.
Jamie Grant gave the Trojans a great start by taking it to the hoop, missing on his first attempt but converting on the follow up to open the scoring. He finished the game with 11 points.
The Trojans also got a solid effort from Ethan Andrew who scored 16 points and directed the team's offence all game.
Ben Kwasnik and Tommy Gemmell were outstanding on offence and defence for St. John's.
It seemed that every time Hager hit a three-pointer for the Trojans, Kwasnik answered with his own three-pointer.
Kwasnik finished with 16 points for the Green Eagles, while Gemmell hit for 16.
"It was a really exciting game," said Gemmell, who also fouled out.
"They came out strong, had a lot of hustle and I felt like they really brought their best game. I'm happy with how we responded. I've never played in a game with so much energy."
Gemmell gave credit to his teammates for their hard work.
And he congratulated North Park for the win.
He said he is looking forward to playing Game 3.
"It should be a great game," he said.
The Green Eagles also got solid contributions from Joe O'Grady, who had six points and Chris Brewster with five.
