To show the depth of the WCSSAA Junior Boys' league this season, you have three teams with either 9-3 or 8-4 records playing in the qualifying round (last year, the #5 seed, Bluevale, was the only school with an 8-4 record).
Here are the four games with trips to the quarterfinals on the line:
(12) Southwood at (5) Grand River
Reg. Season: Did Not Play
The Sabres' program is making some strides, as evidenced by their junior & senior teams both qualifying for the playoffs this year. I think the GRCI squad has a bit too much firepower for the Sabres to pull the upset in this one, though the Sabres have played some of the top teams tight at time during the season (e.g., 4 point home loss to Eastwood).
Pick: GRCI by 24
(11) Galt at (6) Cameron Hts.
Reg. Season: CHCI 60, GCI 38
The Ghosts ended their season with three consecutive wins, but the Gaels finished theirs with 4 consecutive wins, including an impressive dismantling of Forest Heights and a double-digit win over Huron Heights. Galt's chance to stay with the Gaels in this one will require them to keep this game in the 30s or 40s, which I don't necessarily see happening.
Pick: CHCI by 26
(10) WCI at (7) Forest Hts.
Reg. Season: WCI 51, FHCI 45
Interesting one here, as the lower-seeded team in the match-up actually defeated the higher-seeded club during the regular season. That's reflective of the Trojans' inconsistency during the season (lose to WCI, but beat #2-seeded Eastwood). On the flip side, WCI having beaten them will mean that FHCI won't take the Vikes lightly.
Pick: FHCI by 8
(9) KCI at (8) Huron Hts.
Reg. Season: HHSS 54, KCI 38
The Huskies have to be disappointed with the way they finished the year; they were at 7-3 and could have possibly snuck up to grab a top-4 spot, but two consecutive losses dropped them to the #8 seed. Assuming they don't overlook the Raiders, they do have the talent to make the quarterfinals.
