Norfolk News: Sabres, Titans Need Second Half Rallies to Secure Finals Berths

It’s pretty safe to say a thunderous one-handed dunk by Tevaun Gardner did more than bring the crowd to its feet.

It also woke his Holy Trinity Titans teammates up.

With his team clinging on to a five-point lead early in the third quarter, Gardner’s aerial attack surged the Titans to an 18-3 second half run, leading to a 36-20 win over the Waterford Wolves.

With the win, the Titans will have a chance to defend their Norfolk Secondary School Athletic Association senior boys basketball title Friday against the Simcoe Sabres.

“It was just one of those plays where I had the lane so I went for it,” Gardner said. “It felt good to do it. I’m just glad we won this game.”

Teammate Braden Ongena said the play was just what they needed.

“It’s one of those things that just picks you up,” Ongena said. “As soon as he dunked it, it gave us a ton of energy. We really picked it up after that.”

Ongena and Gardner each had 10 points, while Lenny Forrest led the way with 14. Jacob McGivern added a pair.

Logan Donaldson led the Wolves with six, while Colen Walsh had five, Zack Muise netted four, Warren VanLoon had three, and Zach Heipel added two.

“We really picked up our game on the boards,” Gardner said. “In the first half they were out rebounding us. If we want to win Friday, we have to come to play like we did in the second half.”

Like the Titans, the Sabres had a brilliant second half to come away with a 38-27 win over the Delhi Raiders.

“We really had to buckle down,” Sabres’ Jordan Peever said. “At halfime he (coach Greg Pajor) said this wasn’t the regular season anymore and we had to get it together. If we don’t, we’ll be done in the first round, just like last year. The guys really picked it up. ”

Peever led the charge, scoring nine of his 13 points in the second half. Miles Caley ht three from beyond the arc for nine points, while  Steve Kozak scored seven, all in the second half. Tyler Kozak scored six, and Kyle Dedrick added three.

Rodney Boodram led the Raiers with 14, while Mark Murray added nine, and Braeden Polinko scored three.

The Titans and Sabres will play the final at Simcoe Composite School Friday at 7:30 p.m.
