Brantford Expositor: BCI Wins Game 1 of Junior Final

Article By:  Michael-Allan Marion

The Brantford Collegiate Mustangs galloped over the North Park Collegiate Trojans to win the first game Tuesday in the Brant County junior high school girls basketball best-of-three championship series.

BCI won 39-28 in a game that showed the rewards from a combination of aggressive play and good defensive skills, Mustangs coach Ron Jamula said after the final whistle.

"North Park is solid and they're well coached," he said. "You have to play 32 minutes of basketball against them if you want to win.

"We play best when we are aggressive. We did that and we got turnovers that helped us. Turnovers are key."

The game, played at St. John's College, showed the two teams at peak performance.

The Mustangs charged into a convincing lead in the first quarter and scarcely looked back. They took advantage of several North Park turnovers and capitalized on fouls.

By the end of the second quarter, the Mustangs led 21-8, with Taylor Hill scoring eight points off three baskets and two of four foul shots. Other baskets came from Kennedy Chisolm and Anne McDougald.

The Trojans responded with Noelle Adams finding the hoop in three of four foul shots, and Simrand Grewal scoring five points.

The Mustangs continued to dominate through the third quarter, increasing their lead to 32-15. The Trojans rebounded in the third and fourth quarters with eight points on two three-pointers and a basket from Grewal, and seven points off three baskets and a foul shot by Bria Yurczyszyn.

But the Mustangs reasserted themselves, beginning with a three-pointer by Hill that Jamula said came at a crucial time.

"I like that we had strong defence and that we all worked together," Hill said.

"We had each other's back."

Then the Mustangs simply paced and outlasted the Trojans.

The second game is Thursday at St. John's College. Game 3, if necessary, is Friday.
