GUELPH — Players for the Bishop Macdonell
Celtics aren't planning to let their young age get in the way of their
quest for supremacy in the District 10 high school senior girls'
basketball league.
The Celtics, with four Grade 12 student who
played on the squad that reached the D10 final last year, advanced to
Thursday's semifinal with a 55-14 win over the Centre Wellington Falcons
in Tuesday's quarter-finals.
"It's been a transition year, a building
year, but it's been great and next year there'll be a lot of Grade 12s
so it'll be an even better year," Bishop Mac captain Rachael DiGravio
said. "The Grade 11s that have come up, it hasn't felt weird at all
because they've made such a smooth transition going from junior to
senior. They fit in right away."
"This season, every game I've seen
progress," Bishop Mac coach Brittany Green said. "Every game I've seen
pros and different things we've worked on and been getting better at. I
hope this isn't our peak. I hope our next game against Ross, it's going
to be a tough game, a tough match-up with them having a lot of senior
players, Grade 12-plus players. They have a really tough zone defence
and I hope that is when they really come out at their peak."
Many of the players on this year's team were
members of Bishop Mac's junior squad that captured the D10 title in
their league last year. They moved up along with coach Green who has
taken over the head coaching position from Karen Bremner. A hectic
schedule forced Bremner to step aside although she still acts as an
assistant coach.
"Every season I've been playing at Bishop
Mac, this time of the year is always the time when you look at your
playoff game and you go 'Wow, we've grown so much since the beginning of
the year.' This is our time when we're peaking," DiGravio said. "We
have a lot of tough games, so it'll be a test to see if we have grown,
but I'm confident we've developed as a team and developed as
individuals."
"It was a different season for sure, having a
lot of my juniors from last year come up," Green said. "We thought it
was going to be a developmental season having so many young players, but
they're work horses. What they may lack in skill, they make up for in
effort and that's been fantastic to see."
Johanna DeJong led Bishop Mac with 10 points
while Elena Boyle had eight and DiGravio and Julia Boyle had six
apiece.
Abby Clayton had eight points for Centre Wellington while Grace Rooney added four.
Bishop Mac, league champions six times in
