Brantford Expositor: Hard Work Pays Off In Championship For Eagles

The St. John's College Green Eagles captured the Brant County senior girls basketball championship on Thursday.

The Eagles played tough defence and hustled all over the court to defeat the North Park Trojans 66-21 to win Game 2 of the best-of-three championship series. St. John's won Game 1 on Tuesday 70-34.

Even when they were well ahead on the scoreboard, the Green Eagles maintained their intensity.

"That's how we play," Maddi Cohoon, of the Eagles, said.

"We just play our game -- it's a fast-pace game. We just keep working hard and it pays off."

A big part of the team's success is hard work.

"We practise the way we play," said Kendra VanLeeuwen, of the Green Eagles. "We practise hard and it pays off when it's game time."

The Green Eagles are one of the top teams in the province. While they were expected to win the county championship, it still feels great to come out on top, Vanleeuwen said.

The Green Eagles were led in scoring by Kaitlyn Overeem with 15 points and VanLeeuwen with 14.
The Trojans, meanwhile, were led in scoring by Brooke Cesar with eight points.

"It was a tough game, that's for sure," Cesar said. "But they're one of the best teams in the province. They play hard all game and we just try to do the same thing all game.

"We played hard right until the end."

She noted that St. John's makes its opponents earn their points.

Both teams will be heading to Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association championships next week at Waterloo Collegiate Institute. St. John's will play its first game at 10:30 a.m. Friday, North Park will play its first game at 1:30 p.m.
