D8 Junior Playoffs: Monday Semifinals

The #1 Resurrection Phoenix and the #2 St. David Celtics are certainly expected to meet in Thursday's D8 championship final, although the #3 Woodland Cavaliers can't be discounted after finishing the season by reeling off four straight wins.  Here's a look at today's games:

(1) Resurrection vs. (4) St. Benedict
Interestingly, with St. Mary's not making the playoffs, the winner of this game will also receive a ticket to "AAA" CWOSSA.

Resurrection, who set a record for defensive efficiency this past year, enters as the overwhelming favourite.  They won both league meetings by 20+ points, including the season opener where they started the game on a 20-0 run.

Grade 9 PG Sydney Gucker-Wickie has been very strong for the Phoenix during the season, while Trinity Lombardi has been having a nice season for the Saints, averaging in the 8-10 PPG range.

St. Benedict can hang with Rez should the Phoenix go into a drought offensively, which they have been known to do at times this season (they were undefeated but only averaged 37.7 PPG).  Of course, scoring enough points to win against Rez's stingy defense is a tall task.

Pick:  Resurrection 41, St. Benedict 19

(2) St. David vs. (3) Woodland
After starting the season 1-5, the Woodland Cavaliers reeled off four consecutive wins to finish their season at .500.

The two games against St. David, which were decided by 10 and 6 points respectively, were at the start of the season and it's clear that the Cavs appear to be improved from that point.

I like the Celts here, but I do expect another low-scoring, hard fought game.  Should be interesting!

Pick:  St. David 28, Woodland 20
