The St. John's College Green Eagles tore apart their North Park
Collegiate Trojans prey in the first game of the Brant County
best-of-three senior girls basketball final on Tuesday.
The Eagles beat the the Trojans 70-34 in a game played on their home court.
"It was a great start, the kind of game we wanted to play," head coach Matt Lynch said.
"We played intense defence that dictated the pace of the game. The offence came out of that defence."
Control of the play through the first two quarters allowed the Eagles to finish the first half 43-17.
While he said all the players put in strong performances, Lynch
praised the versatile talent of Kendra Van Leeuwen, who contributed
several baskets and three-point shots.
"When she wasn't scoring, she was setting up other plays,' he said.
The Eagles demonstrated why they were unbeaten all season as they
dominated with aggressive play that kept the Trojans mainly bottled up
in their own end.
Van Leeuwen led the St. John's scoring in the first half with 15
points. She did it with three three-pointers, two baskets and two foul
shots. Kaitlyn Overeem also launched a three-pointer and two baskets for
seven points.
North Park responded with seven points by Sarah Minutillo from two
three-pointers and a basket, while Sydney Adams had two baskets for four
points.
"We went on a lull in the third quarter, and North Park went on a bit of a run. They didn't stop playing," Lynch said.
"Then we went on a run of our own and finished the game with the win."
The Eagles and Trojans meet in the second game Thursday.
A third game, if necessary, will be played Friday.
