It was a "good news, bad news" day for the GCVI Gaels on Thursday afternoon in the D10 Senior Girls' basketball league.
First, the bad news for GCVI fans --- the Gaels dropped their final game of the regular season, a 42-32 decision at home to the JF Ross Royals. Both teams as a result finished with 10-2 records.
On the positive side, GCVI still clinched first place in the league's standings by virtue of an earlier 22-point win at JF Ross. As a result of the team's 1-1 record against each other, head to head point differential became the second tiebreak.
In Thursday's game, Maddie Darling poured in 22 for JFR, while Heather Anderson added 8. Sydney Wilson netted 10 for the Gaels.
Thursday's other game was between two teams who already knew where they would be finishing in the league's standings -- and is actually a playoff preview of a game to take place next Tuesday.
Bishop Mac, the #3 seed (9-3) took out #6 CWDHS (1-11) by a 60-18 score.
As such, the D10's playoff picture is as follows:
(1) GCVI - bye
(2) JF Ross vs. (7) Orangeville
(3) Bishop Mac vs. (6) CWDHS
(4) Centennial vs. (5) Lourdes
Junior
The final day of action saw Lourdes defeat St. James 40-21, GCVI double up JF Ross 24-12, and Bishop Mac take out CWDHS 48-12 on the junior side of the ledger.
Like the senior league, two teams tied for first -- Lourdes & Bishop Mac finished with 13-1 records, each defeating the other once during league play. Lourdes will be the #1 seed for the playoffs based upon the head-to-head point differential.
After the two 13-1 teams, St. James was next at 10-4, followed by Centennial (8-6), Orangeville (6-8), GCVI (3-11), Centre Wellington (3-11), and JF Ross (0-14).
The junior quarterfinals are as follows:
(1) Lourdes vs. (8) JF Ross
(2) Bishop Mac vs. (7) CWDHS
(3) St. James vs. (6) GCVI
(4) Centennial vs. (5) Orangeville
Interestingly enough, the top three schools in the junior playoffs are all "AA" schools, who will be battling for the league's lone berth in the tournament.
