KITCHENER — The first time was nice, the
second time was better and the third time was definitely the best.
The Resurrection Phoenix scored a 48-22
victory over the St. Mary's Eagles in the championship final of the
District 8 senior girls basketball league on Thursday night. Krissia
Vasquez led the way with 14 points and Meghan Sharp had 12 as the
Phoenix defeated their rivals for the third time this season.
"It feels great. I was really nervous at the
start because they had beaten a good team (St. Benedict in the
semifinal), the only team that beat us," said Phoenix forward Rachel
Engel. "But we had a good start and that was really important."
The Phoenix jumped on the Eagles early and
never let up. They led 17-5 after the first quarter, extended their lead
to 31-14 at the half and 37-16 after three quarters.
Jama Bin-Edward chipped in with eight points
for Resurrection (11-1), while Summer Pahl had 13 for St. Mary's (8-4).
Resurrection advances to the Central Western
Ontario (CWOSSA) championship that starts next Friday in Waterloo.
"I think we should do pretty well there. I
was with this same group of girls in Grade 10 and we finished second, so
I'm hoping we can win it this time," said Engel.
Resurrection also captured the District 8
junior championship, scoring a 38-14 win over the St. David Celtics.
Delina Romano and Sydney Guker-Wickie had 14
and 13 points respectively for Resurrection, which led 30-2 after three
quarters.
Naomi Cruz and Thalia Cruz had four points each for St. David.
The Phoenix will take part in the CWOSSA junior championship.
Meanwhile, the Sir John A. Macdonald
Highlanders will face the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels in Tuesday's
Waterloo County final after those teams won semifinal games Thursday.
Griffin Lack-Shane scored 15 and Joanna
Bamberger added nine for SJAM in a 38-17 win over the Bluevale Knights
and Nina Farkic paced Cameron Heights with 25 in a 44-32 win over the
KCI Raiders. Alia Hazimeh had 11 for KCI and Thea Taylor added 10.
