Purple & Gold Final: Cameron Heights 62, JF Ross 52
The Cameron Heights Golden Gaels were victorious in the championship final at the Resurrection/Huron Heights "Purple and Gold" Classic, defeating the JF Ross Royals (last year's winner) by a 62-52 final.
The big difference in this one? Shooting. The Royals shot just .278 from the floor and .583 from the line, while the Gaels almost hit 50% from the floor (.487) and were over 70% from the line (.703).
The Gaels led essentially the whole game, though it did get a little tight down the stretch (within 2 points) before solid free throw shooting and great defense helped Cameron close it out.
A key moment for the Gaels actually happened in the first quarter, when they were down 12-8. They actually scored 7 (yes, seven) points on a single possession. How? Vedran Dmitrovic was fouled on an "and-one" and then a JF Ross technical foul and 2/3 free throws there tied the game up. On the ensuing inbounds, Cameron nailed a three and took a lead that they would never relinquish.
Dmitrovic led Cameron with 25 points, while Jason Thompson had an excellent game for Cameron with 14 points and 12 rebounds (including some key rebounds down the stretch). Nem Simic also added 14 for Cameron.
The Gaels managed to hold Ross' Nick Maule in check (11 points), while Mike Friesen was the top scorer for the Royals with 19 points before fouling out.
