A few "surprises" in the WCSSAA league on Tuesday have made things a whole lot more interesting after the top two spots (SJAM and Forest Heights).
"Surprises" is in brackets because it can be argued that all three have been flying a bit under the radar in the WCSSAA league.
Let's start with those games....and you don't have to rub it in. Yes, I picked all three incorrectly.
Eastwood 66, Huron Heights 62 (OT)
The Rebels have been playing good basketball, but I wasn't expecting this just yet. No sighting of Huron Hts' top scorer Sean Samuel in the leading scorers --- curious if he wasn't playing or if Eastwood simply shut him down. At any rate, the balanced Rebel attack was led by Mirza Zahic (16), Jerelle Vaughan (15), and Djordje Govedarica (15). Sam Hernandez had 16 for Huron Heights.
Glenview Park 47, Cameron Heights 45
This might not have surprised me at the start of the year, but the Gaels were playing some of their best basketball as of late. Andrew Squires was held to 12 points for GPSS, but Erist Wame had a solid effort with 16 in the win. Vedran Dmitrovic again led Cameron, this time with 19 points.
Jacob Hespeler 47, Waterloo CI 37
I remember either a year or two back when the JHSS juniors beat WCI and somebody had mentioned that they "thought" it was the first time in history that JHSS beat WCI. If that was indeed the case, the Hawks pick up their second career win over WCI. 6'2" PG Jason Quiring is looking like a WCSSAA first team all-star as he had another 20+ performance, this time with 22. Lucas Marsden added 12 in the win. For WCI, Jeremy Scott and Adam Anagnostopoulos had 12 each.
Now, the rest of the action:
SJAM 54, Southwood 23
SJAM: Quinn Turner 12
SSS: Cash Seraphim 10, Brandon Starr 8
Bluevale 59, Galt 41
BCI: George Stankovic 20, Lukas Seibert 13
GCI: Jake White 9, Darren Saunders 7
Waterloo-Oxford 48, KCI 44
WODSS: Chris Thomson 21
KCI: Amanj Aras-Saber 12
Grand River 81 Elmira 28
GRCI: Ethan Brazeau 14, Nate Walker 13, Jon Milks 12
EDSS: Walker Stewart 10, Dalton Wagner 5
Forest Heights 52, Preston 37
FHCI: Nienkel Paljola 15, Javon Masters 13
PHS: Wes Meertens 21, Jonathon Gonzalez 6
So, that makes the standings look as follows:
X - clinched playoff berth
1. Forest Heights 8-1 (X) - Head to Head over SJAM
2. SJAM 8-1 (X)
3. Cameron Heights 7-2 (X)
T4. Huron Heights 6-3
T4. Waterloo CI 6-3
T4. Grand River 6-3
T4. Jacob Hespeler 6-3
T8. Eastwood 5-4
T8. Glenview Park 5-4
10. Waterloo-Oxford 4-5
T11. Preston 3-6
T11. Bluevale 3-6
T11. KCI 3-6
T14. Southwood 1-8
T14. Galt 1-8
16. Elmira 0-9
....3rd place and 9th place are separated by 2 games! Should make for an interesting final three games of the year.
