WCSSAA: Bluevale Dominates WCI

Not so fast, Vikings.

WCI's unbeaten bubble was burst on Tuesday night by the visiting (and still undefeated) Bluevale Knights.

The Knights were victorious in convincing fashion, dispatching the Vikings by a 65-34 final.

Interestingly enough, in their league encounter last year, the Knights dumped the Vikings by the exact same 31-point margin (53-22).

This year was no different --- by the time I arrived in the second quarter, the Knights were up 27-10 and didn't look back. The Vikes had difficulty getting things going on offense against the aggressive Knights, and numerous turnovers (some forced, some not) prevented any hope of a comeback.

After cutting the halftime deficit to 13, Stefan Cvrkalj moved effectively off the ball in the third quarter for some open jumpers to help push Bluevale to a 44-28 advantage heading into the fourth.

WCI started the fourth quarter with an "and-one" from Alex Copp and a Scott Coghlin bucket in the first 1:30; however, the offensive outburst was short live as those would be the only Viking field goals in the final frame.

The Knights went on a 12-0 run (thanks to 2 Karsten Beney three-pointers and 4 Cvrkalj free throws) over a 3:30 stretch in the fourth to put things completely out of reach. By the time Cvrkalj cashed a three-pointer with 2:30 to go to push the lead to 30, both coaches quickly got the deep benches some playing time.

Obviously, Bluevale has established themselves as the team to beat in WCSSAA, but where do we put WCI? Is this a simple-case of some after-holiday rust? Time will tell......

My Players of the Game:
Bluevale - Stefan Cvrkalj
WCI - Scott Coghlin
