Eastwood Senior Boys 0-3 at Pinky Lewis
Facing some tough competition, the Eastwood CI senior boys' basketball team went 0-3 this past weekend at the Pinky Lewis tournament in Hamilton.
The Rebels were thrown right into the fire with their first pool game against perennial GTA powerhouse Eastern Commerce, and fell by a 66-29 final. Patric Pincea had 8 for ECI in the loss.
The Rebs then dropped their second game 60-36 to Governor Simcoe of St. Catharines, a team that will be in K-W next week for the Heinbuch Classic tournament.
In their final game, Eastwood put forth a strong effort but came up on the short end of a 60-52 decision to Cardinal Newman of Stoney Creek. Gondor Teny netted 13 to lead ECI in that one.
St. John's Takes Senior D5 Title; Junior Still Up For Grabs
The St. John's Green Eagles are the D5 champions after a 32-30 win over Assumption last Thursday. The Eagles knocked in two free-throws with :05 on the clock as the go-ahead points.
St. John's advances to "AAAA" CWOSSA, while ACS' season is done.
The junior final is tied at 1-1 (best of three) after St. John's got past Brantford CI on Thursday. The deciding game goes tomorrow evening.
Rebels, Vikes to Play for WCSSAA Title
Wednesday's WCSSAA senior final at Preston HS in Cambridge will be an all-AAAA affair. In two similar games, ECI and WCI got up early and held on down the stretch. WCI had a 16-point lead that BCI chipped to 5 in the late going before succumbing in a 47-40 game (Lindsay Taylor led all scorers with 15 for WCI). Eastwood was up 12 at the break, and by 10 after three but Preston made a run in the fourth quarter before falling 53-49.
The junior final (6:30pm Wednesday) will feature the top two seeds, Waterloo-Oxford and WCI.
Trojans, Phoenix in Sarnia This Weekend
Some junior boys action on tap this weekend as the past two CWOSSA "AAAA" junior champs, the Forest Heights Trojans and Resurrection Phoenix, will represent CWOSSA at the St. Christopher's "Black and Blue" tournament in Sarnia.
The first-round matchups include St. Christopher (Sarnia) vs. St. Clair (Sarnia); St. Patrick's (Sarnia) vs. Forest Heights; Sarnia Northern vs. Resurrection; and London South vs. St. Basil (SSM).
Alumni Update (South of the Border)
Bryson Johnson (St. David '09) knocked home four first-half three-pointers en route to a 16-point performance but his Bucknell Bison came up short against the University of Minnesota 70-58. Johnson finished 4/10 (4/9 3PT), 4/4 from the line and added 5 rebounds and 1 assist while playing virtually the entire contest (39 minutes).
Meanwhile, it didn't take Bluevale '11 grad Stefan Cvkralj long to make an impact at Lehigh. He knocked home a three-pointer within five seconds of checking into his first collegiate game this past weekend at Iowa State. Cvrkalj went 2-for-3 from three-point range for 6 points and added in a rebound in 7 minutes of action; Lehigh would drop a close one on the road by an 86-77 final.
On the women's side, WCI '08 graduate Kaila Montgomery started both of Cleveland State's games this past weekend, against Tennessee State (74-56 win) and Big 10 school Illinois (72-42 loss).
In 19 minutes against Tennessee State, she went 1/4 from the floor and 1/2 from the line for 3 points, while adding in 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and one block.
Against Illinois, she saw 15 minutes of court time and went 1/2 from three-point range for her three points while also contributing one rebound.
