D8: Phoenix Clinch Second With OT Road Win

Needing to win or lose by 9 points or less to clinch 2nd overall in the D8 senior girls' league, the Resurrection Phoenix likely would have been happy with a 1-point loss.

Instead, their game went to OT where the Phoenix were still at risk of finishing 3rd if their opponents, the St. Benedict Saints, came through with a big four minutes of play.

Yet it was the Phoenix that controlled the extra frame, outscoring the Saints by 8 en route to a 36-28 victory in a relatively low-scoring affair.  The Phoenix were able to control the pace and essentially ensure that the Saints would not manage to pull out the required double-digit win.

Janelle Santi topped the Rez scoring with 12; the Saints' scoring details were not immediately available.

The other game saw the St. Mary's Eagles finish undefeated with a 43-13 win over Rockway.  Lots of action for SMHS' usual reserves in this one ---- Linda Nguyen had 12, while Treisha-Lee Thompson, Laura Franco, Jenn Joseph and Monica Januszek had 6 each.  Steph Veltri (5) and Ashley Cullen (3) led the Flames.

So, on Wednesday you have the following semifinal games:
(1) St. Mary's vs. (4) Monsignor Doyle
(2) Resurrection vs. (3) St. Benedict

Note:  MDCSS takes AAA CWOSSA berth

Junior
Rez finished atop the standings with a perfect 10-0 mark, after taking out St. Benedict 29-17.  However, the Saints (who will face Rez again on Wednesday in a semifinal) lost more than the game as key starter Brooke Wanklin suffered a severe ankle sprain and is out for Wednesday's game.

Rez's scoring details weren't available; Amber Baetsen had 11 and Kayla Leusink had 6 for SBCSS.

Meanwhile, St. Mary's secured the #2 seed with a 50-8 rout over Rockway.  Sydney Greulich (13), Laura Kay (8) and Deanna Gayle (8) topped the Eagle scoresheet, while 4 Flames had 2 each.

That sets up Wednesday's semifinals as follows:
(1) Resurrection vs. (4) St. Benedict
(2) St. Mary's vs. (3) St. David

Note:  SDCSS takes "AAA" CWOSSA berth.
