WCSSAA Quarterfinals: Favourites Advance; CWOSSA Qualifiers Almost Set

The favourites came through on Tuesday afternoon in the WCSSAA girls' quarterfinals.

In fact, only one lower-seeded squad pulled out a win, and that was in a toss-up game between #5 Jacob Hespeler and #4 KCI in the junior ranks.  KCI beat Jacob Hespeler by 1 point in their regular season meeting.

The results below now set up "Semifinal Saturday" at Huron Heights on Saturday afternoon and evening (Junior Semifinals - 2:30 and 4pm; Senior Semifinals - 5:30 and 7pm).

Senior
The top-seeded (and top ranked in CWOSSA) WCI Vikings had a tremendous defensive outing on Tuesday afternoon, pulling away from #9 Elmira early en route to a 45-13 victory.  Lindsay Lessard (16) and Lindsay Taylor (10) had double-digit efforts for the Vikes, while Krista Wiens and Amy Hachman had 4 apiece for Elmira.

The Vikes will play their Waterloo rival, Bluevale Collegiate, in one semifinal on Saturday after the Knights got all they could handle from #5 Jacob Hespeler before securing a 45-39 win.  Natalie Bishop had a huge game for BCI with 22, while Sarah Hamm added in 10 more for the Knights; Brooklyn Wright had 14 and Emma Sleeper 8 for Hespeler.

In a low-scoring affair, the #3 Eastwood Rebels and #6 Cameron Heights Golden Gaels slugged it out early, with a slow pace and some missed shots resulting in a 4-1 Eastwood lead after one quarter of play.  The Rebels would pull away in the second half to win by a 36-19 final, backed by 21 points from Michelle Hudyn.  Meagan Karai added 9 for ECI, while Liz McLellan (9) and Ashanti Lewis (6) topped the CHCI scoring.

Preston is the lone "AAA" squad in the semifinals after a hard-fought 57-47 win over a scrappy KCI squad.  Veterans Nikea Worrell (16) and Kirsten Leach (13) helped the Panthers come through with the win, while Christiana Koebel had 17 and Olivia Nelles 10 for the Raiders.

Saturday's Semifinal Schedule
(1) WCI vs. (4) Bluevale - 5:30pm
(2) Preston vs. (3) Eastwood - 7:00pm

Junior
As mentioned above, the #5 Jacob Hespeler Hawks were the lone lower-seeded team to advance, stifling the explosive KCI offense in a 30-21 win on the road.  Courtney Wright (10) and Candice Wright (8) led the way for the Hawks, while Frances Campbell had 12 and Kelsey Dawe 5 for KCI.

The win ends KCI's season, while Jacob Hespeler will be an "AAA" CWOSSA representative.

Top-seeded and undefeated Waterloo-Oxford had limited trouble getting past #8 Bluevale, winning 49-17.   Madison Horst (19) and Alisha Glendinning (13) topped the WODSS scoring; Tess McIlwraith had 6 and Julia Curran 4 for Bluevale in defeat.

WCI (#2) got a run from #10 Eastwood but prevailed in a 33-21 game.  Kaylee Anagnostopoulos (14) and Brittany Scarrow (6) were the Vikes' top scorers, while Kayla Shantz had 5 and Caitlyne Rysdale 4 for ECI.

The Elmira Lancers also moved through to the semifinals (and AAA CWOSSA) with a 39-22 win over #6 Grand River.  Nicole Cressman (11), Karley Sider (9) and Sydney Jones (9) keyed a balanced EDSS attack, while Leslie O'Glave and Jamie Noonan had 4 each for the Rens.

Grand River's season isn't over, though, as they will advance through to "AAAA" CWOSSA as the second WCSSAA representative.

Saturday's Semifinals:
(1) WODSS vs. (5) Jacob Hespeler - 2:30pm
(2) WCI vs. (3) Elmira - 4:00pm
