Kaitlyn Schenck slashed and shot her way to a 29-point performance on Friday night, equalling the output of the Resurrection Phoenix by herself as the St. Mary's Eagles captured the D8 Senior title with a 48-29 victory on Friday night at St. Mary's.
The game started slowly for both teams, with the Eagles grinding their way to an 11-5 lead after one. Things picked up in the second, where Schenck caught fire and hit a crazy off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer (after Laura Boterman had saved the ball from going out of bounds), resulting in a 27-11 halftime lead for the Eagles.
As for Schenck? She had 19 of those 27 first-half points.
The Eagles' strong play continued in the second half, and they took the air out of the ball and prevented any chance of a Rez comeback.
A nice moment occurred late in the game, when the Eagles got Alysha Hergott into the game for her first minutes of the season. Hergott, if you recall, suffered a torn ACL earlier this year, but has exceeded expectations in terms of her recovery time and could be available for the CWOSSA championships.
The only question remaining late would be if my 17-point prediction would be correct, but the Eagles might have been wary of it as Laura Boterman jacked up a jumper with :04 left that was put back by Emma Jade for the final 19-point margin (I'm not mad at all - ha!) To be fair, Jade was deserving to make it into the scoring column after being a pest on defense all evening long.
Alongside Schenck's 29-point effort, the other Eagle starters accounted for the rest of the scoring --- Laura Boterman (7), Natasha Stoyakovich (7), Shelby Dixon (3) and Emma Jade (2).
Rez received 10 from their star Jacqui Rodrigues, although the Eagles hounded her into a 4-for-18 night from the floor. Danielle Duncan had 7 points and 10 rebounds, Janelle Santi 6 points and 9 rebounds, while Marley Neiscier (4) and Theresa Wylie (2) rounded out the Phoenix scoring.
