Crusaders, Vikes Post Impressive WCSSAA Championship Wins

One team gradually pulled away, the other built up an insurmountable lead in the first half.

Either way you slice it, the Waterloo-Oxford junior Crusaders and the Waterloo Collegiate senior Vikings are your 2011 WCSSAA basketball champions.

Junior
In the opening tilt of the championship doubleheader, both WODSS and the junior WCI Vikings got off to a slow start --- showing some nerves through the opening 8 minutes that ended with W-O up 10-5.

The Crusaders began to seize control of the game, though, in the second, led by THREE Madison Horst back-door cuts for layups and a big three-pointer by Rebecca Payne that pushed the lead to double-digits late in the first half.

A 13-0 run by Waterloo-Oxford to open the second half virtually ensured that the WCSSAA title would be heading over to Baden; by the time the final seconds ticked away the scoreboard read 48-25 in favour of W-O.

It was announced earlier on Wednesday that the Crusaders will also be the #1 seed for the "AAA" CWOSSA tournament this weekend.

The win concluded one of the most dominant seasons in WCSSAA junior girls' basketball history.  The Crusaders were the class of the league, winning each of their 14 league/playoff games by more than 19 points.  No opponent scored more than 29 points against them.  With their strong guard play and solid height/interior game, it's no surprise to see them enjoy as much success as they have.

Waterloo-Oxford received a game-high 20 points from their quick-as-lightning guard Madison Horst, who also added in 6 rebounds in the win.  Kyla Burrough netted 11 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, while their other key forward, Alisha Glendinning, also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Rounding out the WODSS scoring were points from Rebecca Payne (5) and Tess Pettigrew (2).

WCI received a solid effort as usual from Kaylee Anagnostopoulos (16), while other Viking scorers included Olivia Bender (5), Brittany Scarrow (2), and Isabella Kellerman (2).  Although they came up short on this night, the Vikes are expected to be in contention at CWOSSA "AAAA" this weekend.

Senior
The WCI Vikings used an 18-2 run over the second quarter to seize complete control of the WCSSAA senior final and cruise to a 62-40 win in the nightcap.

Things got off to a rocky start for ECI when star forward Michelle Hudyn picked up two quick fouls and had to sit for the bulk of the opening frame --- WCI took advantage and led 21-8 after one, before catching fire in the second frame and heading to halftime up 39-10.

The Rebels showed what they were capable of in the second half, as they came out with some passion and scored 4 quick points --- they actually equaled their first-half output in the first 4:30 of the third quarter.  However, every time that it looked like the Rebels might make a move, WCI had an answer courtesy of (most often) Lindsay Lessard, Lindsay Taylor, and Alex Klein.

Eastwood got within 16 points midway through the fourth quarter after a reverse lay-in by Hudyn, but that would be as close as they would come down the stretch.  Still, props to the Rebels for fighting all throughout the second half and showing what they were truly capable of.

Leading the way for WCI in the win was Lindsay Lessard with a big 22 point effort, while Julia Pavlik and Alex Klein had 12 each.  Lindsay Taylor netted 9, Lynn Dabrowski had 4 and Ashley Hammerbacher added 2.

After a slow start, Michelle Hudyn had a great finish to her final WCSSAA game, putting home 17 points and adding in 16 rebounds for a massive double-double.  Other Rebels on the scoresheet included Caitlyn Schlegel (8), Erika Gardiner (6), Lindsay Ward (5), and Meagan Karai (4).

Both WCI and Eastwood will advance to this weekend's "AAAA" CWOSSA championship in Brantford.

We'll have more on both these games, including full recaps and boxscores, tomorrow.

And in other news from Wednesday evening, despite the absence of yours truly attending to the WCSSAA finals, my co-ed K-W volleyball team got a big performance by those that were in attendance as they pulled out consecutive wins up in Waterloo.
