WCSSAA: No rust for Cvrkalj, Masters

Two of the top guns in WCSSAA basketball had awesome performances on Tuesday night.

In the junior ranks, Forest Heights guard Javon Masters poured in 42 points as the Trojans blew away the Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders 74-51. Juwan Miller chipped in 13 for the winners, while Chris Thomson had 16 for WO.

On the senior side, in the game that I attended in Waterloo, Stefan Cvrkalj had 39 big points for Bluevale in their 65-34 win over WCI. Jasper Wesson & Alex Copp were the lone Vikings in double figures with 10 each.

To add to the drama on Tuesday, we also saw a couple of upsets on the senior side.

The upstart Preston Panthers squeaked past one of my top ten CWOSSA clubs, the KCI Raiders, by a 38-37 final. Looks as though the Raiders had difficulty contained Jeff Robinson, who had half of Preston's points (19). Arben Kalaba was held in check and led KCI with 9 points (Alex Galea also had 9 for KCI).

In stark contrast to the scoring outbursts noted above, neither the KCI/Preston junior or senior games saw a team crack 40 (38-37 senior, 30-16 junior).

In another upset which might have been just as surprising given the margin of victory, the winless Glenview Park Panthers demolished the Huron Heights Huskies by a 54-21 final. Winston Karges (18) and Brandon Hall (13) led the Panthers, while Ogi Oroz had 10 for Huron.

Here's a look at the rest of the senior WCSSAA action on Tuesday:

Southwood 66 Elmira 38
My Pick Was: SSS

No surprise here as the Sabres get a key win. This, coupled with the KCI & WCI losses, has them in good shape and right back in the hunt for a possible first round bye. Brian Doran adds to his 20+ club tally with 21 points. Eric Alderice was the high man for Elmira with 12.

Forest Heights 77 WODSS 39
My Pick Was: FHCI

The Trojans get back on track as they nearly double up the Crusaders. Taylor McNaughton had 18 for FHCI.

Cameron Heights 67 Eastwood 41
My Pick Was: CHCI

Don't look now but the Cameron Gaels are slowly creeping up the standings ladder. Keep in mind they had single-digit losses to Bluevale & SJAM earlier. Are they a top-four club themselves? Nebojsa Djeric had 17 for Cameron and Stefan Arezina chipped in 14 today. Zaman Sindy & Steffon Heyliger were the Rebs in double digits with 10 each.

SJAM 63 Grand River 49
My Pick Was: SJAM

No trouble for the 'Landers here as Ben Reyhani (22) and Jake Robinet (20) had solid outings. Backcourt mates Brody Verbiski (19) and Osama Qahwash (14) led Grand River.

Galt 52 Jacob Hespeler 48 (OT)
My Pick Was: JHSS

Big win for the Ghosts in what I had earlier referred to as a "coin flip". The OT tilt definitely lived up to that. Big efforts were chipped in by Galt's Nic Bradford (19) and Tyler Audet (18). The Perkins boys (Joel & Jeremy) each had 11 for the Hawks.

WCSSAA Junior Results (aside from FHCI/WO mentioned above):

SJAM 45 Grand River 40

GRCI: Chuder Teny 17, Filip Cvrkalj 11

JHSS 58 Galt 30
JHSS: Jason Quirhy 27
Galt: Darren Saunders 7

Southwood 47 Elmira 31
SSS: Zac Sauer 20
EDSS: Aaron Nafzinger 13

Huron Heights 70 Glenview 51
